For more than 45 years, Interferry has served as the shipping association representing the ferry industry worldwide. What began as an organization that largely facilitated networking among our members, has transformed into a highly respected global association with more than 270 members from 40 countries. Today, Interferry not only continues to support networking among our members, but also has a laser-like focus on the safety and security of passengers, crew, cargo and ships. We also ensure that fair and equitable regulations exist for the ferry industry, including free, fair and open competition, as well as the protection of the environment. Interferry’s Domestic Safety, Regulatory and Security committees focus on those topics of importance to our industry. Interferry has consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which allows us to advocate for our industry and fight for sector-specific amendments to regulatory proposals to ensure they are most appropriate for the distinct design and operational requirements of ferries. Our members represent all types of ferry operations: RoPax, RoRo, Cruise Ferries, Fast Ferries, Passenger-only Ferries, and ferries both large and small. Suppliers to the industry are also an important part of our membership from shipbuilders and designers, to naval architects and marine engineers. The diversity of the ferry industry is such that a one-size-fits-all regulatory environment is detrimental to many of Interferry's members. From very small, very local domestic operators, to very large companies that operate in multiple locations – many internationally – Interferry advocates on behalf of the wider industry, ensuring we represent all members' interests. We believe the industry is stronger together. While domestic associations work on the issues faced by ferry companies in their home markets, Interferry focuses on the picture with a global lens

Virtu Ferries, a 100% owned subsidiary of Virtu Holdings, operates a scheduled High Speed Passenger / Vehicle Ferry Service between Malta and Sicily. With a crossing time of 90 minutes to Pozzallo this multiple daily, year-round, service, has eliminated the geographic divide between Malta and mainland Europe, making Malta truly part of the European Market. The service, operational since 1988, now carries over 400,000 passengers, 95,000 private and commercial vehicles, annually, between Malta and our closest neighbour, Sicily. The route is currently operated by M/V Saint John Paul II, capacity 900 passengers and 167cars or 23 trailers and commercial vehicles and M/V Jean De La Valete, 800 passengers and 156 vehicles or 20 trailers and commercial vehicles. The schedule of over 1400 voyages per year allows for year-round Day Return Excursions to Sicily from Malta and similar seasonal excursions to Malta from Sicily; these excursions, of ever-increasing popularity, have turned Malta and Sicily into two-point tourist destinations. Specifically, with user friendly timings, the schedule caters for family holidays as well as for niche commercial markets with a daily interchange of fresh agricultural and dairy products and fish between the two islands. Saint John Paul II and Jean De La Valette before her have revolutionized transport, and consequently trade, between the two Mediterranean islands. A more recent, now an established market, is Maltese residents owning a family holiday home in Sicily as well as Sicilians commuting between their hometowns in Sicily and their workplace in Malta. There are a number of Sicilians restaurants scattered all over Malta and the Island is a second home to many of highly skilled Sicilians, essential to Malta’s economy.

Tankship Management, a 100% owned subsidiary of Virtu Holdings, provides the full range of marine technical services, marine engineering and ship registration under the Malta Flag. Marine technical services provided include, dry docking, preventive maintenance, supplies, crewing, compliance audit with all statutory requirements including ISM, ISPS and Flag State and Port State regulations.The company’s Marine Engineering Department is responsible for surveys and inspections, conversions and supervision of new buildings.
