During the summer of 2015 Smart Energy Today, Inc. created a marketing campaign that would assist the them in retaining their position as the second fastest growing company in Washington state according to Forbes. I was initially hired into a position that would assist in coordination of the early frame and strategy for this new campaign. I was the first in charge of managing a team in day to day door to door operations. Soon enough, I was promoted to a marketing management position where I was placed in charge of spearheading the marketing campaign as a whole and ensuring all marketing personnel were properly managed. As the campaign grew and evolved, so did my responsibilities in with this young company. Eventually, I was asked to contract for the company and replicate the marketing engine I had created across the Pacific Northwest. The final title I held here was Marketing Management Director.

Working with local small businesses, McLellan Marketing and Strategy was an independent consulting operation that satisfied the needs that many new entrepreneurs lack. Identifying target markets, business plan development, horizontal integration strategy, social media, public relations, and event coordination are just a few of the services that MM&S offered during its many years of independent operation.

My responsibilities in marketing at Jones Soda Co. were numerous and varied greatly. Jones Soda believes intently that the best way to coax people into becoming a consumer of their product is to go out and put the product in their hand. As a result, many days were spent guerilla marketing, looking for large groups of the target demographic and handing out free sodas, t-shirts, hats, and other merchandise. Other times at the office included designing campaigns, merchandising, testing new product and conducting consumer test reports, filing and organization, creating mass email marketing blasts for fans, packaging custom cases of soda, package labeling, and other general public relations.

My time at this small marketing firm was occupied by everything from building and installing signs, supervising others, driving and monitoring display routes with a company truck, documenting and filing reports, and other various rolls and responsibilities. Because our small business had so few employees and so many clients, it relied very heavily on the ability of its managers to be multifaceted in our talents. All contract work was business to business where I maintained and satisfied professional relationships with local realtors, developers, and property managers.

Formerly known as Phoenii (as in multiple phoenix), although the business was never fully accredited and funded, it was a project that consumed 21 months of my life and required more dedication than any entrepreneurial undertaking I worked on prior. The Conduit was an equity finance platform that allowed start-up companies to raise capital through the tactical art of crowd funding; the collective cooperation of people who pledge their resources to support others in exchange for something of equal value. Participants were limited to entrepreneurs and “high-net-worth individuals” (as defined by the SEC at the time). The Conduit was designed by myself and five peers at The Evergreen State College and pitched to many a venture capitalist. With a start-up cost at 1.4 million, our project was viewed as quite ambitious, though our efforts were not hindered. We did indeed raise our series A start-up cost before the 2012 JOBS bill made it possible for Americans of ANY net worth to invest in and trade private equity. This essentially over-saturated The Conduit's market by allowing popular crowdfunding platforms to enter the segment without proper certification which The Conduit specialized in acquiring. Our niche was closed and so our investors jumped out. And so was the birth and death of my first business in the finance industry.

Sponsored by a fellow independent businesses owner by the name of Dale Hansen, Mattman Enterprises was an internet-based venture which I eventually built to profitability. The platform was an online mall of sorts through Amway Global, which consisted of more than 3 million miscellaneous products. I was in charge of everything enterprise related from selling products by hand, to balancing the business bank account and talent acquisition for team building. I choose to “suspend” this business activity to ease my course load in college.
