Colorado Senate District 5

Over saw political marketing, strategy, and fundraising for the Committee to Elect Don Suppes. The Committee's goal was to elect Don Suppes to Colorado State Senate Dist. 5, which was targeted by both the Republicans and Democrats as the number one take-back/defend seat. I worked closely with Mayor Suppes, the Colorado GOP, and contractors and volunteers to implement objectives.

Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) is the leading NGO on maritime piracy, with a particular focus on the Indian Ocean Region. As the legal intern, I was merged with the team to answer technical legal questions, analyse policy papers concerning maritime piracy law, and update the counter-piracy matrix. The position involved a high level of analytical skills, understanding of domestic and public/private international law, along with diplomatic channels.

Orchard City, Colorado

Elected on 3 April 2012 to serve the remainder of a term on the Orchard City Board of Trustees. Upon taking office, Mr Soper was the youngest public official on the West Slope of Colorado.Orchard City was founded in 1912 and includes three unincorporated communities of Austin, Cory and Eckert (each has their own Post Office). The municipality has no sales tax or property mill level and operates predominately from the sale of domestic potable water. Orchard City owns 18 natural springs on Grand Mesa which provides fresh water to the town's 3,100 citizens every day. Mr Soper voted in favour of a hydro electric unit to be built near the water treatment plant to off set the town's electric bills. The cost savings will allow the town to save money for pipeline replacement and future water works improvements. Res 2012-03, concerning mosquito spraying and fighting west nile and other mosquito borne viruses was written by Mr Soper and has led to legislation introduced in the US Senate to allow for areal spraying over water, as long as it meets certain guidelines, such as time of day, amount and type of spray, and location. The law changed in December 2011 after the EPA changed the definition of water for mosquito spraying purposes.

Only two-term elected student trustee in the history of Colorado Mesa University (formerly Mesa State College). Initiated an annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration to focus on working with many cultures and races. Provided input during the Master Planning of the university and helped with both lobbying and fundraising efforts. I held pizza and conversation nights to hear from my constituents and to update them on the activities of the board of trustees. Was the student face to the board of trustees and pushed for lower tuition and fees and more efficient uses of those fees. Worked closely with President Tim Foster and became fondly known as Mr Mesa during my final year.

Western Colorado

Coordinated a network of volunteers in 34 counties and developed the grass-root campaign. Served as a surrogate for the State Treasurer at meetings and social events. Planned, scheduled and served as the leader on the advance team for all visits by the State Treasurer to Colorado’s Western Slope.
