My research involved cutting edge developments in network software and technologies. We published a report on the key emerging technologies in the then-nascent segment of online communities. I was fortunate to learn under Bill Welty. He was a tough boss who would not tolerate intellectual laziness, and encouraged a broad-based, whole thinking view. As part of my efforts to understand technology, business, and the qualities that drive success, regular reading topics included evolutionary biology, bionomics (economy as a self organizing ecosystem), chaos theory, emergence (complex systems arising out of simple rulesets and interactions), complexity theory, string theory, and even a fair amount of science fiction and cyberpunk. This reading, reasearch, and the long conversations with Bill, helped shape my thinking to this day.
