I focus my law practice on U.S. tax aspects of financial instruments, with an emphasis on state and local (tax-exempt and taxable) bonds, and certain corporate bonds. I am a member of the firm’s national federal tax and public finance practice. I am located in the firm's Denver office but split my time between Ohio and Colorado. I am also hired by bond counsel from other firms to provide tax assistance relating to public finance matters.I advise clients on developing effective and efficient tax solutions relating to debt financing. My clients have included banks, securities dealers, governmental and corporate securities issuers, student loan lenders, energy and solid waste recycling companies, manufacturers, hospitals and other healthcare and senior living organizations, various types of nonprofit community service providers, schools and higher education institutions, multifamily housing bond issuers, transportation providers, various types of special districts (California and Colorado), special benefit districts (Nebraska and Kansas), tax allocation districts (Georgia) and community development districts (Florida). My tax credit bond experience also includes stripping and secondary market sales of tax credits. I also represent issuers and borrowers in Internal Revenue Service audits and private letter ruling and voluntary closing agreement program (VCAP) requests.I am admitted to practice in the great states of Colorado, Idaho and Ohio and the equally great Commonwealth of Massachusetts and before the U.S. Tax Court. I am an active member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, have served as the chair of the association’s Tax Law Committee and currently serve as Treasurer on the Executive Committee. I am fluent in German and have served German companies and individuals in business and litigation matters. I have served on other community boards, including as Treasurer and Director of Manor Vail Lodge in Vail, Colorado, as Director for the Colorado Chapter of the German American Chamber of Commerce, and as member for the City of Pocatello, Idaho CDBG allocation committee.I am the owner and developer of TouchTax (http://www.touchtax.com), an iOS and Android application used by tax professionals as a research tool and reference product.
