Matthias Spoettle (Dipl.-Pol.) is an expert for sustainable renewable fuels. Since 2010 Matthias is dealing with the implications of the EU Renewable Energy Directive and respective following directives on the renewable fuels market. He consulted the European Commission and national governments on policies for sustainable renewable fuels.After graduating with a diploma in political science and Islamic science in 2006 he gained in-depth experience in international development cooperation, before he started to work as a freelancer within the field of sustainability and renewable energy. Within Ecofys/ Navigant (now Guidehouse) Matthias was working on decarbonising the transport sector, with a special focus on biofuels and e-mobility in road transport but also sustainable aviation fuels. For the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Matthias was steering a project on developing options for harmonisation of international sustainability standards as well as on design options for biojet fuel reporting and accounting. Matthias was also leading a project for the European Parliament on identification of challenges for charging infrastructure in the EU and development of policy recommendations to overcome these challenges. Furthermore, Matthias dealt with sustainable sourcing of biomass for energy and material use, thereby assessing direct and indirect effects. In February 2020 Matthias joined NOW GmbH as Programm Manager Renewable Fuels supporting the German Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure in developing funding guidelines for advanced biofuels, Power-to-Liquid and Power-to-Gas fuels. Since June 2021 Matthias is policy officer for renewable fuels in the German Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.
