About Matthieu Sala

Physicist by training, I have developed three main lines of activity in my professional life :- scientific research in theoretical molecular physics- teaching various aspects of physics, chemistry and numerical computation at the bachelor and master levels- project management in scientific research and higher educationPassionate about science and knowledge in general, my main goal, through my work, is to contribute to provide high-level scientific and intellectual training to the next generation of undergraduate and graduate students, for their own benefit as well as that of society as a whole. In my personal life, I enjoy nothing more than reading a good book, novel or essay, listening to and playing music, and just be with my family and friends.

My work lies in the field of computational molecular physics. More specifically, I use electronic structure and nuclear quantum dynamics methods to study ultrafast molecular processes induced by light. These processes include isomerization reactions on the ground electronic state, non-adiabatic dynamics at conical intersections and their control by shaped laser pulses.

Supervisor: Pr. Helen FieldingTitle: Theoretical study of the photochemistry of aniline using ab-initio electronic structure calculationsThe aim of this project was to investigate the photochemistry and photophysics of aniline from a theoretical point of view. A number of recent experimental studies, including time-resolved photoelectron imaging experiments performed in the group of Pr. Helen Fielding, have revealed the existence of highly efficient and ultrafast non-adiabatic decay channels leading the molecule back to its ground electronic state after excitation above 5.2 eV. However, despite the agreement between the available experimental results, their interpretation in term of decay mechanism remains challenging. We have explored the potential energy landscape of aniline in the energy range corresponding to its four lowest electronic states. Specifically, we have characterized the main stationary points and the various pathways connecting the excited states with the ground state. Our findings provided new insight into the complex photodynamics of aniline.
