Friendly and energetic, with a strong background in physics, software development, neurotechnology and data science. I have a creative twitch and a broad interest in everything related to science, technology and innovation. My current passion is building the next numerical computing ecosystem at ASML. We are bringing modern software tools to ASML, solving the two language problem with the Julia language and bringing engineering competencies together. All to make our algorithmic software products faster, better and smarter. I am leveraging my many years of technical and entrepreneurial experience for this mission.Due to my neverending curiosity I have experience in many technologies, including programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, C/C++ and Julia language. Many years of software development experience in multiple production environments. I taught myself data science, machine learning and AI. I know my way around DevOps. As architect I love to focus on improving our developer experience.Moving between engineering and business competencies, I learned how to pitch ideas and communicate clearly. I have experience leading and coaching technical teams of various sizes. My professional blog is: scientificcoder.comMy private blog: functionalnoise.comMy older medium blogs: https://medium.com/@matthijs.coxI always enjoy coming into contact with new people, ideas and cultures. Would you like to know more about me? Or just want to exchange ideas? Please feel free to contact me.

Metrology ArchitectAsml Jan 2021 - Present"Architects should focus on engineers and outcomes, not tools and technologies"- Accelerate by Nicole ForsgrenSo that's the job! Making engineers effective and happy, so they can create the best outcomes for ASML. The best outcomes are highly valuable products. Since I work in the ASML Metrology department, those products are all about sensors, science, software, data, machine learning and more. All to keep our lithography machines cutting edge while keeping our developers productive. We get there with programming languages, development environments, fast feedback loops, test driven development, continuous integration, DevOps, CICD, Agile. Whatever tool or technology is required to get the job done, I learn it, coach the engineers to use it and streamline the development. All for the best possible outcome. My favorite engineering outcomes so far:- Started a multi-competence development team to build products with new tools and technology.- Happier customers: Together with this team developed backend services for applications that improve our customers user experience, allowing faster issue resolution times.- Happier engineers: Introduced the Julia language and other tools at ASML, to boost collaboration between engineering competencies. We now have an inner-source ecosystem of >100 Julia ASML packages.- Faster development: Ongoing exploration on how to deploy code in multiple ASML platforms at once; in embedded devices, cloud microservices, distributed computing platforms and more. -
Algorithm ArchitectAsml Dec 2018 - Jan 2021Eindhoven Area, NetherlandsWe design algorithms and data science products that help our customers make optimal use of ASML's complex lithography machines. As an architect my task is to define the product roadmap and figure out how to eat an elephant; breaking down the architectural design into smaller parts for the design engineers and software developers. The algorithms live in a complex ecosystem that spans across products and business lines. This introduces organizational complexity with many stakeholders. As the algorithm owner it is my responsibility to manage this complexity and allow the algorithms to succeed. While the algorithms require some complexity, I strive to simplify. This is an art of balancing direct profits against long-term sustainability, for ASML and our customers. Keywords:Systems Thinking, Roadmaps, Product Management, Scaled Agile -
Design Engineer / Data ScientistAsml Feb 2015 - Dec 2018Working with the best and brightest of ASML on nanometer resolution wafer alignment, combining cutting-edge sensors with metrology software and smart algorithms.Involved in multiple cross-functional projects:- Agile/Scrum software development- Test and integration of new sensor functionality across machine platforms.- Researching and developing predictive models and algorithms for the next generation sensors.- Designing and supervising tests at research facilities and customer sites.- Data science toolbox/software development.- Organizing workshops for knowledge transfer towards colleagues. Keywords:✦ Metrology ✦ Sensors ✦ Algorithms ✦ Data Science ✦ Machine Learning -

Founder Of The Symbionic ProjectTmc Feb 2018 - Dec 2018I'm pretty excited about this project, so I am adding it to my resume! We're working on improving control algorithms for Bionic hands and arms. See our Medium publication for our process so far and latest results. As the founder and champion of the project I am responsible for keeping everyone motivated. As the champion I am also heavily involved in all external stakeholder management. As a machine learning expert I am in charge of the architecture of the algorithms and writing code. -
Senior Nanotechnology ResearcherTmc Jan 2015 - Dec 2018At TMC we combine the security of a permanent contract with the excitement of entrepreneurship. We believe that this way of working puts us in the unique position to add value for ourselves, the businesses we work for, and our field. This we call employeneurship.Besides fascinating opportunities and a diverse network, one of the best things at TMC so far has been the focus on our development. I am happy to be in the TMC Masterclass, a talent development program focussing on all aspects of High Tech Systems: multidisciplinary engineering, business development and project management. Our final project: developing affordable bionic hands! -
Phd ResearcherEindhoven University Of Technology Apr 2011 - Jan 2015Research in the young field of organic spintronics, an interdisciplinary research field on the interface of physics, chemistry and materials science. My work focusses on investigating spin physics and magnetic field effects in organic semiconductors. An application of this research is the engineering of plastic magnetic field sensors. My main tasks as a PhD are:- Initiating and managing scientific projects,- Guiding students and trainees (won the physics education prize 2012),- Thin film device fabrication (spincoating, evaporating, sputtering) andcharacterization (electric, optical, magnetic, microscopic),- Numerical (finite element) simulations and theoretical calculations,- Presenting results in scientific journals and on international conferences. -
Editor Faculty Magazine N!Vereniging Van Eindhovense Natuurkundig Ingenieurs Mar 2011 - Feb 2014The quarterly magazine N! is a combined effort of the physics study association ‘Van der Waals’, the alumni association VENI and the education organisation STOOR. The magazine is available to all physics students, faculty members and VENI members.Creating the magazine is a varied and creative task that demands a lot of teamwork from the editorial team. As an editor, I contacted many alumni about science and career and was in charge of writing articles and graphics design. Furthermore, I was a member of the alumniboard to proactively address the future of the association.
