About Matthijs De Winter
Graduated (MSc) as a chemist, although choosing subjects from the physics track of the combined physics/chemistry master Nanomaterials. As an expert (first technician, later PhD, later post-doc) in (cryo-) Focused Ion Beam - Scanning Electron Microscopy (cryo-FIB-SEM) applications, I have been part of groups in Microbiology, Earth Sciences (Structural Geology, Environmental Hydrogeology), Chemistry (heterogeneous catalysis), Physics (Colloids), Utrecht Medical Center (Orthopedic) and at WETSUS... I believe I can say that I have seen quite a diversity of disciplines.Later on, in collaboration with Stuttgart University (Prof. Rainer Helmig), I focused a few years on confocal microscopy and micro-PIV, combined with modelling. And finally, I reached my current destination: The RIVM.Within the RIVM, I got back into a microbiology group where I work on 3 main topics:1-(Micro)plastics2-Transport through air of infectious respiratory particles3-QMRA of ground/drinking water. I am also involved in an energy transition project and I was involved in a study on Control and Prevention-measures against Legionella contamination in tap water systems.Never a dull moment!
