I am passionate about choral music education and the impact that our art has on singers and audiences of all ages. I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and I have more than 20 years of experience as a conductor, educator, and entrepreneur in the choral field.After nine years of collegiate teaching as a tenured Associate Professor at Peru State College, I joined Creighton University as the Director of Choral Activities in June, 2023 where I teach music coursework and conduct the University Chorus and Chamber Choir.As the founder and executive director of Sing Omaha Inc., a nonprofit, multi-choir, community-based organization that serves more than 300 singers of all ages and backgrounds, I oversee the artistic and administrative aspects of the organization, including planning and executing a seven-concert season each year, securing performance and rehearsal venues, managing the budget and fundraising, and recruiting and retaining singers and faculty. Sing Omaha also offers private music lessons and summer camps at two “Sing Omaha Studios” locations in Omaha.I serve on the national board for the American Choral Directors Association as the "Community Choirs Repertoire and Resources Chairman", and am the Executive Director of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association where I support the professional development and advocacy of choral music educators in the state. I served primarily as a liaison between the students and Dr. Eklund, and as counsel for Dr. Eklund as he considered decisions that would impact the choir and the program in both short-term and long-term planning discussions. I helped to initiate a sea-change in the administrative leadership structure within the choir; drafting a constitution which designed a four-tier leadership tree and lifted students onto equal footing with faculty in terms of ensemble management. This included the design and creation of a 12-member choir council (elected by students). In addition to the council, I created positions for pairs of section leaders in each of the four sections, and initiated the drive for a student handbook to augment the course syllabus with specific expectations regarding behavior, attendance, artistic standards, and logistical details regarding performance attire, seasonal calendar, and the like. This leadership change went into effect just six months after initial conversations with Dr. Eklund, and the handbook and leadership structure remain in place. Show less
