I am a young technologist and engineer with a passion for scientific discovery. I recently earned a First-Class MEng degree in Integrated Mechanical & Electrical Engineering from the University of Bath and am actively pursuing research opportunities in human-centered robotics and AI.I have gained expertise in machine learning and software engineering through a year-long industry placement in the AI team of Prosus Group (Amsterdam). Recently, I presented my Masters’ research on intuitive paradigms for decoding EEG neural signals in human-robot interaction at the ICRA 2024 conference (Yokohama, Japan). I have also achieved awards for my work in the Global Student Innovation Competition at the i-CREATe 2024 conference (Shanghai, China).Currently, I am performing a research internship at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in the Biomechatronics & Biorobotics Laboratory (BBL) focused on developing novel neuroscience-inspired deep learning algorithms for classifying invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) motor imagery signals. I'm fascinated by the potential of BCIs and assistive robotics to transform lives and eager to contribute to their advancement in effective real-world applications.Coming from Cape Town, South Africa, I love spending time outdoors and in nature. Research InternshipShanghai Jiao Tong University Aug 2024 - PresentShanghai, ChinaSix month in-person internship based in the Biomechatronics and Biorobotics Laboratory (BBL) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University supervised by Dr. Guangye Li. Researching novel deep learning algorithms inspired by recent studies of functional connectivity and movement-related neural representations throughout the brain. Objective is to improve the current cross-subject classification performance in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) during the representation of hand movements in multiple domains using invasive stereo-electroencephalographic (sEEG) recordings. -
Machine Learning EngineerProsus Group Sep 2021 - Aug 2022Amsterdam, North Holland, NetherlandsFull-year placement in Prosus' AI team.Internship goals included:- Improve/complement foundations and skills on data science, machine learning and the common tools used to develop ML/DS models in practice.- Apply these skills to practical applications in consumer services at Prosus, in domains such as food delivery, education technology, classifields and other online consumer services.- Develop a good understanding of the tools, practices and methods used in machine learning and data science at scale.Internship Projects and Achievements:- Led a project that aimed to improve the product search system of South Africa’s largest ecommerce business Takealot.com by implementing semantic query expansion.- I developed, trained, and deployed ten neural word-embedding models that used past customer search session data to learn high-dimensional representations of queries and products.- Due to the project’s successful results, these models are currently being implemented into Takealot’s search system to improve their customer’s search experience.- (More information of the project can be found in the document and medium article attached).
