Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu, the worlds most widely used Linux distribution. Canonical's services help governments and businesses the world over with migrations, management and support for their Ubuntu deployments, on platforms from the smallest embedded devices to the largest hyper-scale clouds.I was part of Canonical's Consulting Architecture team, working with global customers on cloud transformation projects around OpenStack. I have deep expertise in open source distributed cloud systems at scale and across processor architectures, from hypervisors and related virtualisation technologies, physical and virtual lifecycle and configuration management, automation and orchestration, monitoring, logging, and performance analysis, at up to 99.99% operating uptime levels.I have been an Active User Contributor in the OpenStack project, an Active Technical Contributor in previous cycles, and am also a well known member of the global OpenStack operators community. In 2016 I organised the Operators MidCycle conference, bringing together over 100 members of the global operators community in Europe for the first time. I was appointed Track Chair for the Austin, Barcelona and Boston OpenStack Summits, part of the team selecting presentations for the conference, and also received an OpenStack Contributors Award in Austin for my work in the community. I also sat on various working groups for the OpenStack Foundation, and ran the only official OpenStack users group in the UK.

I was part of the founding management team at DataCentred, and the originator of the strategy and architecture to provide OpenStack based public cloud. DataCentred built and operated next generation public and private OpenStack clouds from their own tier3 datacentre facility in Manchester, UK - with customers across technology development, government, national broadcasters and the university sectors. DataCentred were at the time the only UK owned and operated OpenStack public cloud provider, and the first UK SME corporate sponsor of the OpenStack Foundation. We also operated one of the few heterogenous OpenStack public cloud platforms in the world, having launched the world’s first ARM64 based OpenStack public cloud in early 2015 in addition to our pre-existing x86 based offering. I built all of DataCentred's technical teams, and was responsible for the architecture, development and operations of all their on-demand compute and storage platforms. During this period we grew the business from a standing start to seven figure revenue, with a major blue chip customer base including the UK government.

Working on new file storage products as part of a global team.I sat on the Manchester Lab Leadership and Technical Leadership teams, responsible for defining and executing the Lab's overall strategy, was a member of the Patent Evaluation team, and was also appointed an IBM Senior Inventor for my work on IP generation and patents. I was also an STG Technical Advocate, providing high level support and architectural assistance along with acting as a conduit between the global development teams and IBM's customers.

Led a 15 person hardware and software test team working on systems software for new enterprise class storage virtualisation systems, operating to extremely tight deadlines and working closely with other IBM Labs in Europe, the US and Asia. My role covered the entire process of software test from test plan creation and test architecture, liaison with development and other test teams globally, project planning and status reporting, and ensuring all milestones were delivered appropriately. On a project basis I was also responsible for additional offshore testing staff in other IBM Labs worldwide.

Responsible for internal systems and networks for IBM's STG Manchester Development Lab in the UK, supporting up to 100 engineers creating cutting edge new products for the global enterprise. Management of a team of systems administrators and technical specialists, overseeing a data centre and server rooms across two locations. Rapidly changing environment requiring regular delivery of complex infrastructure projects, and involving enterprise class hardware and software. Responsible for defining IT policy and procedure in line with IBM's IT and security policies.

Management of IT and network infrastructure for a world class software development lab based in Manchester, along with satellite offices in London and Los Gatos, California, developing low level virtualisation products for global customers including IBM, Apple, SGI and HP. Line management of a team of systems administrators, and technical lead on all infrastructure areas. Responsible for all in-house IT systems, and an external data centre, with 500+ hosts across all major architectures and Operating Systems.
