Matt is Director of Implementation at the Center for Behavioral Health & Justice and Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Wayne State University who completed his Ph.D. in Criminology & Criminal Justice at Arizona State University in 2013. In general, his research focuses on evaluation of criminal justice policy, violence, and the intersection of mental health and criminal justice involvement. His work has been funded by the National Institute of Justice, National Science Foundation, and Public Welfare Foundation.Beyond research, Matt teaches for the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program and is founder and co-organizer of JUST POETRY, an annual event that brings together people from diverse perspectives and experiences (e.g. children with incarcerated parents, officers of the Detroit Police Department, victims of violence, former juvenile lifers, etc.) to explore “justice” through poetry/spoken word. Matt has received the CLAS Excellence in Teaching Award, the Learning Community Coordinator of the Year Award, and, while at Saint Louis University, the Award for Excellence in Diversity & Social Justice. Most recently, he received the Early Career Excellence Award from the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Arizona State University in 2022. Matt currently serves as a gubernatorial appointment on the Correctional Officers Training Council through 2024.
