About Matt Klaric, Phd

Dr. Matthew Klaric leads the Predictive Analytics Pod of National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s Research component. He directs a team developing capabilities which analyze current and historical data to make predictions about future or other unknown events. From October 2020 to September 2022 Dr. Klaric served as the Lead Scientist in NGA’s Artificial Intelligence (AI), Automation and Augmentation (AAA) Cross Functional Team (CFT) which later became part of the new Data and Digital Innovation (DDI) component. In DDI he served as the Maven Integration Lead responsible for coordinating planning activities for the program’s transition to NGA. Dr. Klaric served on a joint duty assignment from July 2017 to October 2020 with the Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO) in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He was responsible for managing a portfolio of programs that brought new and innovative AI technologies to military service partners to shape and counter emerging threats in multiple domains by bringing unexpected and game-changing capabilities to create strategic operational effects. His work was instrumental in securing the initial funding for Project Maven—DoD’s pathfinding AI program. The capabilities developed successfully have transitioned to multiple operational DoD programs. Previously, Dr. Klaric served in NGA Research from 2015 to 2017, and led the team responsible for the creation of the xView computer vision dataset in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit. This dataset supported a public prize challenge to encourage the development of computer vision algorithms for object detection in commercial high-resolution satellite imagery. This dataset has since been cited in hundreds of scientific publications furthering research in this field. Dr. Klaric was an Assistant Research Professor at the University of Missouri from 2010-2015 researching methods for improving the efficiency and accuracy of exploitation of satellite images. Based on this research, he co-founded Terra 4D Systems in 2010 which automated change detection in commercial satellite images to assist intelligence analysts performing broad area search, aid geospatial analysts with foundation feature updates, and prioritize post-disaster resource allocation. Dr. Klaric holds an Honors Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Saint Louis University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Missouri. In 2019, he received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).
