This dataset supported a public prize challenge to encourage the development of computer vision algorithms for object detection in commercial high-resolution satellite imagery. This dataset has since been cited in hundreds of scientific publications furthering research in this field.

Managed a portfolio of programs that brought new and innovative AI technologies to military service partners to shape and counter emerging threats in multiple domains by bringing unexpected and game-changing capabilities to create strategic operational effects. This work was instrumental in securing the initial funding for Project Maven—DoD’s pathfinding AI program. The capabilities developed successfully have transitioned to multiple operational DoD programs.

Conducts and supports a variety of cutting-edge research efforts in the Center for Geospatial Intelligence in the areas of image processing and feature extraction for high-resolution satellite imagery; database technologies for geospatial information systems; and web-enabled geospatial information services including: content-based image retrieval, shape-based object retrieval, geospatial information queries and change detection. Supports various ongoing Department of Defence contracts. Develops new research proposals and attracts additional R&D funding from Department of Defense agencies. Supervise undergraduate and graduate student researchers.

Developed a content-based retrieval system (GeoIRIS) for high-resolution satellite imagery. Involved the development of novel image processing algorithms, change detection processing, data management techniques and high-dimensional indexing of large datasets. Resulted in the publication of 3 peer-reviewed journal articles and 9 peer-reviewed conference papers. Additionally, 5 patents have been filed on topics related to this research.
