Director Of Energy Management Services

Current

San Antonio, Texas, United States

Director of Energy Management Services. Guiding clients in reduction of energy consumption and emissions, applying Whole Building Energy Models (WBEM), Technical Reference Manuals (TRM) and Social Cost of Carbon (SCC).• Performed ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit for large city in NC. On 245 kft2 found $136k/y savings for $3.3M investment with 24.4 years payback prior to incentives, plus 672.7 ton/y emissions reduction.• Performed ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit for city in NC. On 1 Mft2 (cultural) found $485k/y savings for $9.7M investment, plus $2.4M lifetime avoided SCC. On 144 kft2 (municipal) found $18k/y savings for $610k investment, plus $98k lifetime avoided SCC. Recommended cultural measures only.• Performed ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit and developed WBEM for 52.7 kft2 engine test facility of equipment dealer in TX. Identified power generation, process heat recovery, pump speed reduction, lighting retrofit and HVAC setpoint adjustment opportunities. Recommended investments of $259k for savings of $55.4k/y and 4.7 years payback. Installatiom of PV and ORC feasible but not advisable without incentives.• Performed Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) study for real estate group in TX (92.5 kft2) based on WBEM with twelve measure combinations per building, including glazing, ligthing, HVAC and photovoltaics. For strip malls found lifetime savings between $110k and $435k for investments of $75k to $425k. For warehouses found lifetime savings between $370k and $910k for investments between $280k and $1M. Required SIR greater than one identified for several measure combinations.• Performed Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) of addition to large museum on university campus in TX. Developed WBEM for 36 kft2 of new construction. Investigated replacement, operation and maintenance cost of combinations of economizer, energy recovery and PV sytem over 40 years. Determined configuration without economizer, energy recovery and PV system to have lowest present value.

Oct 2018 - Present

Director Of Building Analytics

San Antonio, Texas, United States

Director of Building Analytics. Developed solutions to building performance challenges, including whole building energy analysis, hydraulic loop analysis, computational fluid dynamics analysis, thermal comfort assessment and economic comparisons.• Devised large parametric study on effect of envelope construction, building orientation, shading, daylighting and lighting power density on payback period and presented results to architect offices (OpenStudio/EnergyPlus).• Supported life cycle cost assessment on commercial project for RTU/VAV vs. VRF HVAC systems – found VRF to have 25% energy consumption advantage over RTU (Trace-700).• Created multiple whole building energy models for IECC, LEED and CHPS compliance analyses (OpenStudio/EnergyPlus & Trace-700).• Assessed potential for chilled water Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system at community college site and impact on operation of central plant – found 3,000 or 6,000 tonh TES to be cost-effective for 600 ton plant (Trace-700).• Explored various performance models for chillers and cooling towers in order to improve model fidelity (OpenStudio/EnergyPlus, Excel VBA).• Analyzed capacity of chilled water loops and plants for expansion potential and identified locations for additional or enlarged chilled water pipes at community college campuses (Pipe-Flo, EPAnet).• Conducted several CFD analyses to assess thermal stratification issues in room air distribution, identified ceiling fans as most cost effective solution (FDS-SMV).
