I teach the power of precise and concise language to rising professionals at Utah State University. It enlivens my consulting work to be on campus around faculty and students at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business, Data Analytics and Information Systems program.

I lead qualitative research and strategic thinking for Research Forward. We are a specialized evidence- and knowledge-based consultancy, heavy on front-end research and data to anchor strategy. We know education best: higher ed, k-12, ed tech, and corporate learning. We have also led non-profit and commercial ventures, conducting custom research in those settings.

I did primarily qualitative research and reporting for internal and external audiences, centering the experiences of learners to inform new learning products and strategy at SNHU. I was appointed to set up the University-wide Experience Research Center where we centralized and simplified research tools and facilitated collaborations between research teams. My research has included studies of learner experiences in their own words, hiring manager perspectives on the value of degrees, credentials, and preferred brands, SNHU advisor interactions with learners, learner experiences in beta-phase learning products such as a hybrid online/in-person course, and potential learners in career transition.

I helped students create new pathways for success through education. Drawing on ethnographic thinking and user-centered social science research, I help a team of scientists, the campus community, and our corporate and government partners understand learners. We work together to facilitate their pathways and improve their experiences.

Matt built a team focused on new opportunities for businesses and citizens to experience Japan in Boston, carrying forward a community established in 1904. Research on our audience led to growth on all indicators: • Created more than fifty events that drove public participation through the roof. • Increased corporate donors by more than double through a redesigned sales initiative. • Presented the two most profitable fundraising gala dinners in JSB history. • Produced a new bi-weekly newsletter: Japan Events in Boston, now distributed to more than 7,000 Japan enthusiasts and supporting all Japan-related organizations across Boston.

Matt wrote fresh analysis of the communications technology sector, usually about open source projects such as WebRTC or the "maker" movement. He has a habit of urging companies to rethink the way they view customers. Matt co-published the influential WebRTC Ecosystem Report, profiling more than 200 companies that have built commercial offerings with WebRTC capabilities. Matt drew on training in quantitative (SAS, JMP, UCINET) and qualitative, especially ethnographic, analysis (MaxQDA) in this work.

Matt successfully piloted JASK, a non-profit cultural and business exchange organization, through the financial challenges of the late 2000s. Japanese businesses and their American counterparts rely on JASK as a cultural bridge. Under his leadership, JASK tripled program participation. They brought a fresh website online and revamped records management. They established the Japan! Summer Festival, still attracting thousands of citizens after more than ten years. Matt led a statewide team of civic volunteers across Kentucky to host more than 100 Japanese guests in Kentuckians' homes. He continues to serve as a board member of the Manjiro/Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange that promotes that event.

Matt designed research on business clusters in Kentucky and managed federal grant projects on behalf of city and county governments in Central Kentucky. He was interim director of the Lincoln County Economic Development Authority. He led in affiliated agencies: Global Opportunities for Kentucky, Bluegrass Global Affairs Association, and the Development Advisory Committee.
