I have been involved with radio since I started up a hobby online station in a spare bedroom, aged 11. “Nerd!”, I hear you say. You're absolutely right!2009 / At 19 I landed my first radio job at Curtin FM 100.1 while studying at Curtin Uni, working alongside legendary West Australian media identities including Peter Newman, Peter Waltham, Jenny Seaton, Keith Taylor, Ted Bull, David Ellery and news editor Les Welsh. I also gained valuable experience at the ABC and was WA runner-up in its 2012 cadetship program.2012 / First commercial radio gig was in Sydney at the city’s number one station (2GB 873), aged 21. Across 4 years as a journalist in Perth and Sydney - I broke two Labor leadership spills, flew to Canberra for the 2013-14 Federal Budget, covered two federal election campaigns, New South Wales & Victoria bushfires, CHOGM Perth, London 2012 Summer Olympics, Australian Olympic Team welcome home, Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, Lloyd Rayney arrest, Prince Charles and Camilla in Sydney, Sydney NYE, countless crime, court, sport and state political stories - and some fluffy ones.2014 / Morphed into a radio announcer, hosting a workday music shift in WA’s mining-heavy Pilbara region before a breakfast promotion. 2015 / I was promoted again to a statewide network drive show based in Perth - creating a music/news/entertainment hybrid format (Spirit Drive with Matt Layton) and using the vast resources of Seven West Media. I also fronted the Rio 2016 Olympic and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games coverages for the Spirit/Red FM networks.2019 / All the hard work paid off - my show was number one with a 36.8% total audience share in the Hedland/Broome ratings. The show's 'last hurrah' in late-2019 saw me lead a group of listeners and competition winners to New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville on the "American Music Cities Tour".2020 / After 4 years of presenting “Spirit Drive", a radio network ownership change and turning the “big 3-0” - a fresh adventure kicked off in Cairns - a return to a news environment presenting radio/on-demand news bulletins across Queensland. A restructure led to me being a regular local news voice in Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and Mackay.2022 / I returned to metro radio, joining the Fox FM/Triple M Melbourne news team and reading news updates across Australia.2023 / I was promoted to SCA’s national news team, presenting bulletins to 80+ radio stations across Australia.2024 / Moved the national news role to Perth, before relocating again to Melbourne.Social media / @mattlaytonradio
