About Matthew Lippert

I graduated from the Ohio State University with a B.S. in Environmental Policy & Decision-Making, with a focus on Water Conservation. In my final semesters at OSU, I became increasingly interested in the ramifications of the way agricultural subsidies, labor & inputs are organized in the United States. Much of my time at Ohio State was spent synthesizing years of data over the loss of ephemeral wetlands overlaying the Ogalalla aquifer in the Great Plains region & labor-organizing efforts to enact sustainable changes to the prevailing food system at the university (an effort which was eventually realized after I'd graduated).Throughout my time at university - and after graduating - I’ve spent much of my professional life either in a kitchen/prep room or performing onstage. These occupations helped me develop a set of soft skills that are not often encountered in other work environments. These skills are somewhat less tangible than my more technical training and include management (both project & personnel), marketing, time management, organization, improvisation/flexibility, and intense attention to detail in real time.I eventually found my way to environmental interpretation & education at a prestigious local botanic garden, The Franklin Park Conservatory. There, I eventually made a lateral move to the horticulture team, and have remained active in the green industry ever since.I currently run the Propagation section at Millcreek Gardens LLC, a small nursery which supplies ornamental perennials, shrubs, annuals, and culinary herbs to garden centers & landscaping operations throughout the region. My day-to-day is mostly focused around production and crop protection, but I'm also using whatever influence I can in my current position to help guide Millcreek through the process of adopting more biorational & sustainable growing practices. Building upon experience from my time in public horticulture and plant health care, I'm well-positioned to help recalibrate Millcreek's IPM protocol toward a rapidly changing landscape in plant production. I'm well-versed in micro- and macro-BCA's and their applications; as well as parts of the burgeoning biostimulant market, which has grown fairly quickly in the past 10 years. If it sounds like my skill & mindset could be of use to you, I encourage you to reach out! I am eager to use what knowledge and skills I have to help move this - or any - industry gracefully forward into an increasingly uncertain future. If you've made it this far - thanks very much for checking out my page!

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Section Grower - Propagation

Ostrander, Ohio, United States

My responsibilities coalesce around starting and cultivating 700,000+ plant plugs per year to be potted into finish containers. I grow ornamental perennials, annuals, and culinary herbs. My responsibilities include but aren't limited to:-Keeping a close inventory of materials on hand to stay ahead of production needs; ie seed, soil mix, plug trays, fertilizer, beneficial insect populations, pesticides, & biostimulant products.-Keeping up with production numbers throughout the spring & summer schedules; starting thousands of plants weekly by method of seeding or sticking unrooted cuttings.-Maintaining healthy stock plant inventory for in-house propagation of select varieties.-All aspects of crop protection including scouting, releases & applications of biological control agents/pesticides, plant maintenance, feeding, biostimulant applications, environmental manipulation, etc.-Making weekly updates to crop inventories relative to production for both seed and URC items in SBI (our inventory software).-Planning for sectional labor needs by weekly production volume & plant maintenance needs, and supervising crews while they work in my section.-I'm most excited at the moment about revising Millcreek's IPM program - at least within my section. I've noticed some improvements since taking steps toward adopting a more biorational IPM approach and am grateful for the chance to allocate more funding toward a greater reliance on natural enemies moving forward. In the past I've performed trials with different biostimulant products, and plan to continue with those as well.
