About Matt Peck
My goal is to create and fun and research-informed training opportunities that improve STEM education and inclusive excellence in the research ecosystem. I draw on 20 years of teaching, mentoring, research, and program-building experience to help colleagues develop transferable skills and community.TRAINING PROGRAMS: I manage, coordinate, and instruct with the WSU-NIH Protein Biotechnology graduate training program, which uses protein biotechnology development as a tableau for transferrable skill development. I also co-direct a WSU-USDA undergraduate research and extension experience (REEU), which introduces diverse undergraduates from several institutions to technical and professional skills used to explore plant stress responses to climate change. FACULTY DEVELOPMENT: I have created and facilitate a mentorship training forum for faculty of three NIH-funded training programs that draws on Entering Mentoring and other research-informed sources. I also get to facilitate WSU LIFT, an inclusive pedagogy training and work with academic and industry colleagues to co-teach biotechnology, biomedical ethics, and plant biochemistry graduate courses.DIVERSE EXPERIENCES: I have taught secondary science and math classes (13 years of experience), serving as a department head, coach, and PTA president; and have worked with diverse students and co-teachers (ranging from middle school to undergraduate levels) in the COSMOS (https://cosmos-ucop.ucdavis.edu/app/main), Breakthrough Collaborative (https://www.breakthroughcollaborative.org/), and Stanford Initiatives in the Biosciences outreach programs. I have written and published astronomy/physical science curriculum for secondary schools (supported by NSF-RET to OU physics/astronomy and the K20 center's GET FIT program). I have professionally edited the scientific English of over 70 research manuscripts to help authors share their essential findings. PUBLICATIONS: I have five peer-reviewed basic research publications on the mechanistic enzymology of translation initiation factors, which has broader impacts in medicine; and acyltransferases involved in grass cell wall development, which impacts agriculture and bioenergy production.https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=cHD4rb0AAAAJ&hl=en&inst=3189495329521712930
