About Matthew Maclaurin

Artistic expression is the core motivating force of my career, and code is my favorite tool. Everything I've done proceeds from there: VP of design for PS5 console & launch; 2x founder with public exit; inventor with 70+ patents and a creative with awards across film(Lawnmower Man), gaming (PS5, Cyan), & technology. Planet scale experience leading and making games, operating systems, large-scale services, and game consoles. VP at PlayStation and Indeed, Sr Director at Microsoft, eBay, Nest, and Meta. Founder at Mediax (1994) and Mythogenic (2024.)AI is incredibly important. We are a wave 2 AI startup in that:- we couple AI with extremely deep non-AI expertise (game dev & design)- we are primarily focused on consumer end-product rather than middleware- our eventual middleware offering targets the future customer of game dev, not the pastAt Mythogenic we think that AI is important but only one aspect of a studio's operation. We also believe that the most productive avenue for AI in gaming is on the technical side rather than the creative. While AI does has obvious benefits for creative roles, the upside in code is bigger. There are some really interesting and powerful ways that AI can instead take on engineering burden, giving each designer their own engineering team with a user interface that is rational, simple, and powerful. Like many things in AI, it's coming faster than you think.It's early days, we have fonts to pick and screens to capture. Stay tuned.

    As the initial R&D team member, I developed numerous prototypes and production systems including LLM-driven level generation, custom diffusion models for (eventual) in-house art style; physics-driven combat animations; procedural foliage, architecture, gameplay authoring, and terrain generation using Procedural Content Generation; UI treatments for mapping and character location; integrated natural language console in unreal for level modification; numerous tests for NPC technology for narrative and rpg-style game.
