As UNIX engineer I worked much like a consultant to our business units (customers). I designed solutions based upon their requirements of uptime and cost. Additionally, I worked with vendors on pricing and support and worked with teams upstream to create and document standards.Some key achievements:Worked as technical project lead for all new installations of hardware - directing network, storage and operations staff as to how systems needed to be configured for new installations.Managed the release process of Linux systems, including automation of tool installation, VMware templates and hardware types.Developed a disaster recovery solution, from process to code, that is still in use many years later (and having the functionality expanded).I was tasked with converting physical servers to virtual machines. We had failures early on. I worked with VMware to learn fully how the tool worked (which included identifying some ambiguity in the documentation) and developed a process, with automation, by which we could use VMware Converter to move mission critical systems to virtual machines (they had some special requirements). Following this process development, the success rate of P2V's was very high and the process continues today.

I worked closely with a business analyst who created service level agreements with our customers, which detailed how business processes were monitored and reported. I took that information and developed monitoring solution(s) using various scripting languages (Perl, sh) and integrated those scripts with Tivoli software. I created methods using the Tivoli Rule language (prolog) to allow users with two-way devices to acknowledge pages via their mobile devices (text/email), OOP scripts to monitor URL availability, automated reporting and worked with our Remedy developer to integrate Remedy with Tivoli.
