After obtaining my PhD in physics in 2016, I seamlessly transitioned from nuclear/particle physics to data science. The world of physics may seem distant from data science, but the data generated by high luminosity particle colliders demands cutting-edge tools and statistical methods for insights. I've taken on the full data science pipeline, from designing data-acquiring hardware at the edge to processing and analyzing unstructured, high-velocity data.Currently, I serve as a Principal Data Scientist at Southern California Edison where my work involves leveraging machine learning, GIS, and data engineering to enhance equipment reliability and quantify various avenues of utility risk due to asset failures. I've spearheaded data modernization efforts, performed web scraping, and utilized Natural Language Processing for sentiment analysis. Additionally, I introduced a bias-agnostic, data-driven approach for key performance metrics, and engineered physics-driven features for robust risk models. I have played pivotal roles in enhancing SCE's public safety and risk mitigation as one of the lead data scientists in developing a highly effective Wildfire Risk Reduction Model, contributing significantly to the protection of communities and infrastructure. Additionally, providing probability of failure models of underground equipment for SCE's public safety roadmap, bolstering our risk mitigation efforts to minimize catastrophic underground asset failures.Beyond these achievements, I have a strong track record of creating end-to-end data pipelines, particularly for mitigation specific bespoke transmission asset modeling. Cumulatively these models have had a profound impact on risk quantification, particularly in separate projects like the General Rate Case and the Wildfire Mitigation Program as well as various major projects within SCE. My work ensures informed decision-making, financial planning, and overall success in addressing distinct challenges that come with providing safe, reliable, and clean energy to Southern California.

Senior Data Scientist, Predictive Analytics/Data Scientist, AdvisorSouthern California Edison (Sce) Apr 2019 - Jun 2022Rosemead, Ca, UsPredictive analytics, machine learning, deep learning, and advanced analytics for Asset Management, Strategy, and Engineering in Transmission and DistributionMy work and contributions have been invaluable for wildfire mitigation efforts in the Asset Management and Risk Assessment landscape. My role consists of leveraging machine learning to provide solutions for Public Safety Power Shutdown (PSPS), risk-informed targeted infrastructure replacement with predictive models, and work bundling optimization. -
Data Scientist, Sr. SpecialistSouthern California Edison (Sce) Jul 2018 - Mar 2019Rosemead, Ca, UsPredictive modeling, machine learning, deep learning, and advanced analytics for Maintenance, Performance, and Reliability under Asset Management and Operations Support. Developed novel metrics used to analyze various aspects of grid performance during and after Major Event Days (MEDs)Utilized NLP and machine learning to extract information and classify events from long form text in unstructured data as well as from fields in various data warehouses.Developed methods for quickly analyzing Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model generated data in conjunction with grid asset data in order to inform high-risk decision making. Pioneered the use of granular WRF data to model physics interactions on overhead conductors. Modeled features provides segment-level recommendations and was used to re-imagine how work is scoped and prioritized. Solution included the development of advanced geospatial analytical tools in ArcGIS to be consumed on ArcGIS online. -

Graduate Student ResearcherUniversity Of California, Riverside Sep 2006 - Dec 2016Riverside, Ca, Us• Contributed and maintained software for a multi-national, multi-institutional collaboration with cutting edge research goals. (PHENIX experiment at Brookhaven National Lab).• Developed hardware calibration software to iteratively decouple measurement offsets and errors.• Analyzed very large data sets (~11 billion events, approx 1 petabyte/year scale) consisting of dozens of features using the physics data analysis framework ROOT (similar to the SciPy stack or MATLAB).• Organized sets of physics features collected from various detectors by validating data quality and transforming it into indexed data structures to prepare for analysis. • Used Gaussian mixture modeling to separate overlapping statistical distributions of particles allowing for the analysis of each particle species independently.• Modeled the statistical variance of these signals over increasing momenta using polynomial models.• Modeled the spatial and momentum distribution of detected particles using Fourier decomposition.• Validated theoretical models by comparing them to Monte Carlo simulated data in order to minimize residuals.• Corrected biases in data caused by systematic errors to verify model behavior apart from measurement bias and fluctuations.• Handled computationally intense analysis using distributed computing. -
