About Matt Fenwick
I'm a content and comms strategist specialising in untangling messy websites and distilling an organisation's message.I’ve loved words my whole life. Scratching out stories as a boy just outside of London. Now I get to do strategic content for a living. And I make it possible for my team to do it too. So the first thing I am is lucky. The second thing I am is autistic and ADHD. I’m fascinated by human communication and the way we make sense of the world because frankly, the world doesn’t always make sense to me. That means I bring empathy for people navigating complex systems. My neurodivergence also means I see patterns and I do it very very fast. Then the final thing I am is pragmatic. All our strategies are fundamentally oriented to making things clear. Useful. That pragmatism means I’m deeply convinced that understanding content is critical to doing comms well. Because it’s when you get into the guts of the content - what do we actually want to say? What do people actually need? That’s when strategies become real. So you’re interested in pragmatic content strategy or you have a problem in that general vicinity, let’s talk.*ASK ME ABOUT*People come to me when they have a communications problem — and they’re stuck.✅ Strategy problems: "we’ve spent a lot of time (and money) examining the problem, but we’re no closer to solving it."✅ Delivery problems: "I need to completely overhaul our website, rewrite all the content and I don’t know where to start."✅ Capability problems: "we need the people, systems and tools to do comms better."✅ Tactical problems: "we want comms that achieves a result — not just pushing out content for the sake of it."How I solve those problems: I use a mashup of human-centred design, brand and comms. It's all about defining where you want to be — then tailoring an approach to get you there. If you've got a business problem, there's a good chance that comms will be part of the solution.

Trainer And Facilitator - Defence Housing Australia
Together with my excellent colleagues at Wisdom Learning, I designed a business writing training program from the ground up and delivered workshops in locations around Australia. Outstanding participant satisfaction ratings.
Lead Brand Strategist - Brand Canberra
Refreshed the brand positioning strategy for my fair city: developing a new brand personality, tone of voice and key messages. A bonus: I also developed and tested guidance material for anyone wanting to apply this brand. Got brilliant engagement right across stakeholders, and a refreshed positioning for the brand.
Lead Content Strategist - Act Government
Created a roadmap for merging a suite of ACT Government websites into one compelling presence. Then we employed human-centred design approaches to create a new information architecture, with a supporting content strategy. Finally, we scoped out the work and resources needed to deliver the content. Our work is now being used as a benchmark for digital strategy.
Lead Content Strategist And Project Manager - Dfat
Led a team of more than 20 writers across five states to rewrite all government travel advisories for smartraveller.com.au. We delivered all content on time and under budget, with major improvements in readability — helping Australians make good decisions and stay safe overseas.
Lead Content Strategist And Information Architect - Cit Solutions
Worked with one of Canberra's most trusted adult education providers to completely revamp their online presence. Collaborating with Cre8ive, I created and tested a new IA, did wireframes and ran content modelling (so they'd have reliable templates for future content creation). We consolidated three sites into one, and shifted to a more human-centred presentation of what they do. A bonus: mentoring their in-house research team to pass on the approaches we used.
Author
Life without lanyards is a manual showing how public servants can make the shift to self-employment, and thrive.I published in 2015, on the back of a Kickstarter campaign that smashed the fundraising goal. We launched at the Canberra Innovation Network, with almost 100 people braving the cold.

Assistant Director, Corporate Communications
I managed a team of writers and designers to produce corporate publications, including Emergency Management News. While acting in this role, I also created content strategies, including for the Department's Bushfire Arson site, and conducted usability workshops.
Online Communications Officer
I managed all web content, collaborating with the business areas to create relevant, readable text. I delivered training in writing for the web, and ran group design exercises to get more usable end-products.I also helped steer the Department's exploration of social media - writing policies and guidance, and talking to business areas about what channels were right for them.
Australia-Pacific Correspondent
Working for ENI, I covered Australian stories for an international audience, from the apology to the Stolen Generations to the 2011 Queensland floods. The challenge in this role was to interpret events for a culturally diverse audience while capturing all of this within a news item format.
Communications And Policy Roles
In my time in the public service, my responsibilities spanned managing annual report content to writing speeches for a head of department. I also drove the refresh of several publications, with updated content, a fresh design and greater relevance to their target audience.
Marketing Coordinator & Writer
I managed Medical Master-class: a distance-education resource for UK physicians. The core of my role was collaborating with international experts on online assessment material. My stand-out achievement in this role was writing the business case to produce a second edition of the hardcopy textbook - a project involving negotiations with UK publishers, as well as our executive.
Communications And Advocacy Officer
I supported our Indigenous staff through communications and marketing advice:1) Writing submissions to Government enquiries2) Managing internal and external writers to create guidance material3) Event management
Law Lecturer
I taught legal research and writing skills to domestic and international students. What I'm most proud of is the feedback at the end of this course. For example, 94% of students said that I explained complex concepts clearly.
