Exhibit design combines architecture, advertising, interaction design, technology and logistics in a way that I find endlessly interesting. Every exhibit has a unique story. The challenge is to -find the compelling story- and -tell it so attendees will understand-. Early Winters was a successful mail order catalog startup, competing with the likes of REI, L L Bean and Eddie Bauer. Founded by Bill Nicolai (climber and general wild man) and Ron Zimmerman (mail order wizard and gourmet chef), Early Winters got its start with the Omnipotent (designed by Nicolai after a near-death experience when his traditional mount tent failed) and was an early adopter of Gore-Tex technology.My job was to source, evaluate and develop new non-clothing products. It was a perfect job, and I'd be there still if the company had not guessed the market wrong: They imported container-loads of inventory from China, just as the market contracted! The lesson? Cash is King!The best part of the job was playing "Stars and Dogs": All the catalog staff would predict the winners and losers among new products introduced in each catalog. I take pride in having scored second among the staff to my boss, Ron Zimmerman, who went on to found The Herbfarm, a now-famous restaurant in Woodinville, WA. Attending trade shows with Zimmerman was the second-best thing!

Two weeks after graduating from college, I put my BA in Philosophy to good use (!), opening a bike shop which only sold BMX bikes. I had been a summer-camp counselor, I had worked two years in a bike shop, and Riverside was as close to the center of the BMX universe as you could get. Small manufacturers were making new bikes, right nearby, not in Italy or Japan or China. And the development was fast and furious. Products could go from hot to obsolete in 90 days.My customers were almost all boys, ages 6 to 16, who got no respect from other shops, because they didn't control the money. My shop catered to them, and welcomed them. I loaned tools. I went to local schools to talk about safe riding, helmets, and locking up. We started an Explorer Scout troop (good insurance coverage!) and went on adventure rides in my 1968 Dodge van. Some of the older kids, the Led Zeppelin kids, rode their bikes in empty swimming pools in the wintertime. Later, they invaded the skatepark. One was featured on the covers of BMX Action and Skateboarder magazines.Then a high school classmate came in and said,"What about those fat-tire bikes?"
