About Matt Lewis

As an expert financial services leader with global management experience in client service, ETFs, capital markets, new-product development, partner development & management, and operations, I drive multi-facetted global business initiatives from idea generation through implementation. For example, while leading the development of iShares® ETFs in Mexico, Brazil, & Colombia, I engaged with regulators, central depositories, custodians, stock exchanges, broker/dealers, clients, and internal teams to build the product eco-systems and regulatory structure. Using the first success from the Mexico market, I used that template to scale into other geos and garnered $2B in AUM & $9M in new revenues in Y-1 alone, beating goals. When building global teams, my focus is on developing an environment of empowerment, providing guidance to build, and to showcase individuals’ unique talents. Leveraging matrix structures I know how to integrate multiple business disciplines to execute on common goals. Keeping long-term focus with a deep understanding of the importance of implementing new technologies to increase productivity, lower cost, and reduce risk, I engage teams that often surpass the most aggressive goals. As an example, while building and enhancing three technology platforms to scale ETF capital markets, to reduce risk, to drive asset under management (AUM), and to grow revenues, I organized teams from the ground-up, empowered them, and unleashed their talent. Within just the first year they delivered results that exceeded not just the set goals, but also the expectations of everyone. Developing deep holistic understanding of how ETFs function within the Capital Markets and providing an efficient means for clients to express their investment views, I have built a loyal following in this product area and market that have consistently delivered results that far exceed goals and set expectations. Current Interests: ETFs, Asset Management

  • American Century Investments
Vice President - Global Head Of Etf Capital Markets
American Century Investments Nov 2017 - Present
    Kansas City, Missouri, Us
As an early hire to start the American Century Investment’s ETF business, I leveraged my expertise in the industry to build out a scalable and sustainable product platform to bring forth a new revenue stream for the company. Engagement throughout the organization including, investment management, sales, marketing, operations, technology, and product to educate on the successes of the ETF industry was key to empowering the organization to drive the initial accomplishments. In addition, I leveraged external partners and relationships and custodians, distributors, market makers, and authorized participants, to support functions critical for the new ETF products to succeed. Recognized that an outward messaging on our business was needed, took the steps to enhance industry footprint by developing white papers/blogs and participated in speaking engagements at industry conferences and webinars. Took the initiative to be an industry leader in the development of the eco-system to support an evolutionary ETF product structure to deliver active management insights and skill in clients’ preferred investment vehicle—the ETF. Organized and led industry meetings to engage market participants on supporting the product structure by building a business around a new function within the ETF eco-system. Ensured strong engagement with external partners and internal colleagues/teams to develop and implement the requirements to sustain scalability and functionality resulting in the global implementation of Active ETFs within American Century Investments and Avantis Investors.
  • Blackrock
Director - Head Of Americas Ishares® Etfs Broker/Dealer Execution Services
    Blackrock Sep 2012 - Jun 2017
    New York, Ny, Us
As a leader within iShares® Capital Markets, I prepared the team for the unprecedented growth of client/market participant usage of the iShares® ETF family. For this, I structured the team into three distinct areas to promote ownership over key product sets and functions, while providing an environment for individual’s career growth. I empowered specific team members to lead the development and continued enhancement of three ETF Capital Markets technology platforms: a primary market issuance platform used by our authorized partners; a fixed income optimization engine to increase the usage of the fixed income ETF products; and a market surveillance platform to scale the team’s ability to monitor over 300 iShares® ETFs for secondary market product quality. The technology enabled the scaling of the team functions to service the rapid increase in product, market participants, clients, secondary market liquidity, and assets under management. Knowing the ETF product life cycle, I challenged the team to identify areas of product enhancements that promoted added efficiency, which led to increased products’ usage. The enhancements included critical eco-systems and product improvements ranging from a decrease in the capital costs for our partner banks to transactional efficiencies within the ETF issuance; leading to easier, more cost effective ways for our clients to access the iShares® ETF products.I built a dedicated ETF Capital Markets team in Canada through understanding the local business needs, hiring elite talent, and leveraging global best practices leading to a highly functional critical team to support the local product set.As an expanded opportunity, I participated in the regional Hack-A-Thon contest. My idea of leveraging three exceptional attributes of the firm to deliver unique client solutions through the use of technology was the winner of the regional Creating an Exceptional Client Experience category.
  • Blackrock
Director Of Product Development For Latin America
    Blackrock Nov 2008 - Sep 2012
    New York, Ny, Us
As Director of Product Development for LatAM, I recognized that the right strategy to bring locally-listed iShares® ETFs into Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia was to leverage education and influence to build a product eco-system that would promote success. I met with regulators, custodians, central depositories, broker/dealers, and stock exchanges to understand the local landscape required to support ETF products, ID’ng the gaps to be filled within the product development cycle. To bring scale and cost efficiency to the platform, I ensured that the internal teams’ existing ETF “experts” were managing the products after launch. The products were launched, with all parallel work streams to support a healthy ecosystem, garnering $2B AUM and $9MM/Yr. in revenue in Y-1 alone, beating goals. In Mexico, the local pension funds had a strong desire to invest in China, allowed by recent regulatory changes. Due to challenges of bringing a locally listed ETF with China exposure to the market, I put the pieces together to leverage BlackRock’s global platform by convincing the US business to launch a China ETF that met the requirements of the local pension funds. This initiative secured a $500MM net new assets and $3MM/Yr. revenue opportunity with expanded benefit of having a desired product for global investors; reaching revenue levels beyond expectations.During all my business initiatives within Latin America, I recognized that a critical path to success was through local partnerships, understanding their business capabilities, cultures, and motivations. I spent the needed time to educate my partners on the importance of ETFs for their country’s capital markets and shifted their thinking on the needed aspects to promote success for the local products. In addition, I educated internal teams on how business is done in the local markets and how we needed to adjust to meet in-country needs.BlackRock acquired Barclays Global Investors on December 1st, 2009
