Public Affairs ManagerLackland Afb, Texas Mar 1995 - Mar 1997As the first public affairs manager with the Air Force Band of the West, I helped generate publicity for the band for the first time in the Houston market. Working with senior Air Force leadership, I set up a sponsorship program with the Houston Chronicle. As well, I increased viewership and sponsorship of the Air Force Band programs throughout New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. I completed my tour at Lackland, working for the Wilford Hall public affairs office. In six months, I revamped the office's emergency response plan, helping the hospital to clear administrative hurdles. As the result of my work, the hospital was able to get media coverage of two major disaster missions. In addition to my work with this plan, I helped the Air Force's medical relief mission to Columbia get international news coverage of their work.

When NATO planes shot down Serbian Galebs, I advised senior leadership on public relations strategy.I also helped the PIO office establish its first Internet connections. While in the middle of the Bosnian crisis, I helped my office get the first email and Gopher feeds into our office.As the head of the media analysis section, I helped prepare a daily news summary of Bosnia, former Warsaw Pact countries and terrorism within the Mediterranean region. My former boss, the late Admiral Michael Boorda, told my bosses that my media analysis work was often more effective than intelligence resources in getting him insight into military and civilian operations during the Bosnian Conflict.

In six years, our program went from a dozen speakers and tour guides into one that had 300 or more volunteers. Denver Mayor Wellington Webb recognized my efforts with "Technical Sergeant David M. Scherer in the City and County of Denver Day" upon reassignment to Italy.I was lucky to have two great bosses -- Col. George Titus and Lt. Col. George Peck. The two "Georges" allowed me to manage and develop programs that helped improve a community's awareness of the Air Force's training mission.As a media representative, I worked with the local media to generate awareness of such key issues as the base closure and the drawdown of military forces. I also was on scene for two military crashes as the lead media relation counsel.

Editor And NcoicHessisch Oldendorf Air Station Oct 1983 - Mar 1987Of all my Air Force positions, I believe that the work with this base was perhaps my favorite tour. As the enlisted manager of the shop, I helped the base feed 400 people a full Thanksgiving dinner on a budget of $400. By using the community support of local groups, I created a potluck approach to the event, helping to make sure everyone got more than a "bite" of turkey.My other accomplishment was the revamping of editing and production policies for the Northern Scanner, the base newspaper. When my supervisor left, I completely changed the administrative processes, resulting in a newspaper that went from the "Puzzle Page" to one of the best in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe.When my oldest son, Andrew, was born with Edwards Syndrome, a Trisome 18 genetic disease, my wife and I were reassigned to Lowry. After arriving at Lowry, the Air Force command in Europe recognized my work with a special achievement and management award in 1987.

In this role, I worked with organizational reps from various military units to promote and publicize activities within our assigned region.

During this tour, our base did a radio program with Santa Claus using the RF-4Cs to locate the homes of the "google little boys" of Austin. As well, I worked with others to help the media understand the issues about aircraft noise, involving the Phantom reconnaissance planes. As I sometimes fly out of Bergstrom International, I chuckle everytime I depart that airport, knowing that the city of Austin purchased homes close to the location because of the excessive noise.

Editor, Globetrotter63Rd Military Airlift Wing Nov 1978 - Nov 1980At Norton, I worked as a media relations specialist before becoming the assistant and then editor of the newspaper. The 63rd Military Airlift Wing was a great organization as the C-141 crews assigned to it performed humanitarian missions throughout the Pacific and Asia.I enjoyred working with Lt. Gen. (Retired) Claudius E. Watts III and General Duane Cassidy. Both of these wing commanders were great leaders who valued public affairs and their ability to communicate to their wing members. In fact. General Watts would visit the newspaper shop, taking a secret backdoor to get a weekly brief on the contents of his newspaper.As an editor, I capitalized on getting information from our wing's current operations shoppe, where I was able to learn about many of the humanitarian missions that made up the front page section of the newspaper.

During this first tour, I learned the basic tenets of media relations from my boss, Katie Cutler.Katie taught me how to learn how to pitch the media effectively as well as write for the local newspaper and national publications. She was such a great supervisor that I named my youngest daughter after her.

Most of my coverage focused on women's sports. To the ISU assistant sports information director, I was a ground breaker. Truthfully, I saw the opportunity to get more hours by covering women's volleyball and basketball. And, while I did cover some varsity football and baseball, I became a major fan of the way women played both volleyball and basketball.
