At Optum Care Services, we were building the technology to support a more personalized and mobile healthcare system. As Chief Architect, I designed cloud solutions for delivering care to patients in remote environments, whether that be a home, clinic, or care facility. We designed and developed systems that integrated clinical information with logistic and personal data to deliver an efficient personalized healthcare experience, with unique marketing, messaging, and care plans for each member, while utilizing advanced heuristic algorithms and data analysis and ML to optimize what care needs to be delivered to which people when.

Paired Health was acquired by C3 HealthcareRx in August 2015. C3 HealthcareRx is a pharmacy, but we also provide medication management services to patients thru partnerships with healthcare providers and payors. At C3, we were able to adapt the PairedHealth technologies to focus on medication management in addition to readmission reduction. We integrated with multiple hospital systems and payors through our dynamic APIs to ensure a seamless and accurate information flow. We were able to increase our information accuracy by process automation and validation. We migrated many functions from enterprise or Salesforce based applications to AWS and Azure cloud-based functionality to provide additional flexibility and scale. In addition to product development, I was responsible for all policies related to HIPAA & Information Security, rolling out programs to the development team as well as across our nationwide employee base.

We founded Paired Health with a goal to get personalized care to where it needs to be - to the patients who need it. We're focused on building the systems and infrastructure that help manage the needs of distributed and coordinated care. We want to bring together all available resources so that they can protect the one thing that matters most to you - your health. We are both building enabling technologies as well as delivering healthcare services to our customers. As CTO/CIO, I'm responsible for developing and assembling the systems needed to accomplish this task. We've integrated many leading edge technologies into our portfolio in order to provide small companies and healthcare workers access to the logistics and communication capabilities previously limited to only large transportation and delivery operations. In March 2011, Hatteras Networks merged with Overture Networks to create a more complete Ethernet specialist. As part of the merger, I accepted the role of Chief Technology Officer, where my responsibilities included product strategy, IP/patent development, technical architecture & leadership, and visionary/evangelist.

In 2007, I was asked to take on executive oversight of the Hatteras engineering organization, including hardware, software, and system test. During this time, Hatteras became the most talented and efficient engineering organization with which I was ever involved. We made some hard decisions - trimming people and products - in order to become more productive. We re-architected our development processes to improve efficiency. We redesigned code to increase portability and flexibility. We added some incredible talent to an already talented team, and continually got better. I was responsible for the entire engineering organization; designing products, meeting schedules, and winning new customers. Our products were innovative and our quality outstanding, needing only a handful of people to support tens of thousands of products in the field. We won multiple tier one customers, and many others all over the globe. During this time, I also continued my CTO activities as detailed in earlier years, continuing to expand Hatteras' market presence. Even in the down markets we grew, some years producing twice the revenue with half the people. Our revenues grew almost 500% in this time frame and we had tier 1 customers in every market. I am incredibly proud of the talent and determination of the entire Hatteras organization.

I was recruited to Hatteras by the investors to help lead and direct product strategy. In the beginning, my focus was internal - helping to define our target market, and design products that would win in that market. So first we defined the Mid-Band Ethernet market (also known as Ethernet in the First Mile, EFM, or [Carrier] Ethernet Access). We created novel products in that space by applying high-value carrier Ethernet principals to existing access technologies, mixing the old with the new to create a simple migration to next-generation networks. Once the market creation/buzz was started, we had to get the rest of the technical community on-board. So we took those principals to the standards communities such as IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.1, MEF, ITU, ANSI/ATIS, etc. We were able to invent new technologies and get the telecommunications industry to standardize on those concepts. My focus then turned external, where I was lucky enough to help evangelize these new markets & technologies in the standards bodies, and with analysts, partners, suppliers, & customers. In all things Ethernet, Hatteras was a driving force in defining, creating, and growing the EFM market and technology. Carrier Ethernet Access now generates over $2B in annual capital expense revenue. In addition to product strategy and technical vision, I was often on the road meeting with customers and partners, constantly refining and selling that vision, creating presentations, handbooks and all kinds of collateral to help reinforce our differentiable positioning. I was also key in product development, where I was one of the architectural drivers behind the Hatteras product line. I performed supplier evaluations, hardware architecture, software architecture, management system architecture,... creating a common, flexible architecture across a variety of products, which permitted a small engineering team to punch well above its weight class.

As a Director on the Board of the MEF, I was one of the few technologists on the Board, surrounded by marketing specialists. I tried to add some practical sanity to the process, representing the realistic limitations of technology and standards, while still evangelizing and pushing boundaries. I also tried to represent the small company perspective as I was one of the few Board members from a company with less than a few billion in revenue. During my tenure on the board, the MEF grew from a fledgling organization to a mainstream technical and marketing powerhouse. It was great to be a part in that success.

The Ethernet in the First Mile Alliance (EFMA) was the marketing organization dedicated to the promotion of the IEEE 802.3ah standards. As a member of the Board of Directors, I helped shape the marketing message and direction of the the technical marketing campaign. The EFMA was eventually merged with the Metro Ethernet Forum, where a new focus was brought to the access segment of Carrier Ethernet delivery.

I was hired as part of the architecture team for the next generation Extreme switching product line. My stint was relatively brief as it proved difficult to be a major contributor on this project - the main architecture was being performed on the west coast, and there was significant resistance between the established team and any new input. This is the one position I have held in which I felt I was unable to have a major impact to the success of my company.

At Windwire, we implemented a leading edge, perhaps too leading edge, advertisement service for mobile devices. The system included a hosted ad delivery service, as well as a front-end for managing ad campaigns. The distributed web service was implemented using a combination of Solaris & Linux servers, with an Apache+Tomcat front-end, a JAVA based middle/arbitration layer, and an Oracle/SQL database (distributed LAMP with an Oracle twist:). I was responsible for system architecture, much of the arbitration layer, as well as designing and developing the system management - including monitoring, alarming, networking, global and local load-balancing, etc. The ad service continued to run for years with zero maintenance due to the self-correcting nature of the system architecture.

After Nortel acquired Bay Networks, Bay Architecture Labs became Nortel Innovation Labs, and continued its mission of external standards leadership, internal technical leadership, and the development intellectual property. I continued may patent inventions, technical development, and standards leadership in organizations such as the IEEE, IETF, and ATM Forum.

I was a member of the Bay Architecture Lab, Bay Networks'​ technical leaders with cross-product responsibilities. My role was as an switching and packet networks expert, developing and prototyping new technologies for use by multiple product lines. In addition to the code & technical development, I had responsibilities in Bay's patent portfolio, producing multiple patents, and pushing proprietary technologies in various standards organizations, where I had leadership and editorial positions in the ATM Forum and IETF.

This was my first job after obtaining my PhD. I was hired as part of the LAN Emulation team, and quickly grew to be the technical team leader and manager. In addition to the LAN Emulation activity, I took responsibility for the Ethernet & Token Ring switching and bridging modules for the product. I represented IBM at standards activities within the first year, becoming Chair of some working groups within a few months. In addition to technical and management leadership, I supported the product in the field, becoming the primary sales/support engineer for IBM's key product in Ethernet/ATM/IP switching & routing.
