In 2007, I was asked to take on executive oversight of the Hatteras engineering organization, including hardware, software, and system test. During this time, Hatteras became the most talented and efficient engineering organization with which I was ever involved. We made some hard decisions - trimming people and products - in order to become more productive. We re-architected our development processes to improve efficiency. We redesigned code to increase portability and flexibility. We added some incredible talent to an already talented team, and continually got better. I was responsible for the entire engineering organization; designing products, meeting schedules, and winning new customers. Our products were innovative and our quality outstanding, needing only a handful of people to support tens of thousands of products in the field. We won multiple tier one customers, and many others all over the globe. During this time, I also continued my CTO activities as detailed in earlier years, continuing to expand Hatteras' market presence. Even in the down markets we grew, some years producing twice the revenue with half the people. Our revenues grew almost 500% in this time frame and we had tier 1 customers in every market. I am incredibly proud of the talent and determination of the entire Hatteras organization.

I was recruited to Hatteras by the investors to help lead and direct product strategy. In the beginning, my focus was internal - helping to define our target market, and design products that would win in that market. So first we defined the Mid-Band Ethernet market (also known as Ethernet in the First Mile, EFM, or [Carrier] Ethernet Access). We created novel products in that space by applying high-value carrier Ethernet principals to existing access technologies, mixing the old with the new to create a simple migration to next-generation networks. Once the market creation/buzz was started, we had to get the rest of the technical community on-board. So we took those principals to the standards communities such as IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.1, MEF, ITU, ANSI/ATIS, etc. We were able to invent new technologies and get the telecommunications industry to standardize on those concepts. My focus then turned external, where I was lucky enough to help evangelize these new markets & technologies in the standards bodies, and with analysts, partners, suppliers, & customers. In all things Ethernet, Hatteras was a driving force in defining, creating, and growing the EFM market and technology. Carrier Ethernet Access now generates over $2B in annual capital expense revenue. In addition to product strategy and technical vision, I was often on the road meeting with customers and partners, constantly refining and selling that vision, creating presentations, handbooks and all kinds of collateral to help reinforce our differentiable positioning. I was also key in product development, where I was one of the architectural drivers behind the Hatteras product line. I performed supplier evaluations, hardware architecture, software architecture, management system architecture,... creating a common, flexible architecture across a variety of products, which permitted a small engineering team to punch well above its weight class.

As a Director on the Board of the MEF, I was one of the few technologists on the Board, surrounded by marketing specialists. I tried to add some practical sanity to the process, representing the realistic limitations of technology and standards, while still evangelizing and pushing boundaries. I also tried to represent the small company perspective as I was one of the few Board members from a company with less than a few billion in revenue. During my tenure on the board, the MEF grew from a fledgling organization to a mainstream technical and marketing powerhouse. It was great to be a part in that success.

The EFMA was eventually merged with the Metro Ethernet Forum, where a new focus was brought to the access segment of Carrier Ethernet delivery.

The system included a hosted ad delivery service, as well as a front-end for managing ad campaigns. The distributed web service was implemented using a combination of Solaris & Linux servers, with an Apache+Tomcat front-end, a JAVA based middle/arbitration layer, and an Oracle/SQL database (distributed LAMP with an Oracle twist:). I was responsible for system architecture, much of the arbitration layer, as well as designing and developing the system management - including monitoring, alarming, networking, global and local load-balancing, etc. The ad service continued to run for years with zero maintenance due to the self-correcting nature of the system architecture.
