At Open Text, I provided the primary design and architecture for several commercial products, and managed an excellent team of dedicated software developers. We used a variety of development processes over the years, from waterfall to agile, and were successful with all of them -- if you know how to write software, you can make pretty much any reasonable process work.I also took on some of the most challenging development work myself, dealt with the most difficult or sensitive customers, and and coordinated or otherwise managed the other activities associated with producing a real product.We produced a variety of enterprise intranet/extranet products, some of which were browser based, and some of which had thick/rich C++ or C# clients for Windows.

Oops -- promoted too far...As CTO of Microstar, I directed and managed research and development, performed strategic and operations planning, personnel management, proposal generation and costing.I was also still the principal software architect for Microstar’s development projects, and mentor to Microstar’s R&D staff.In truth, when I was CTO, I spent as much of my time as possible doing software architecture and leading the development team, because that's what I'm really good at.Eventually, Microstar was bought by Open Text.

In this position at Microstar, I architected and directed the design of all new products, and enhancements to the existing product line.I also managed the development team, and provided consultation and direction on the daily technical issues faced by Microstar staff and clients.

This was my first real development job after my own company folded. I became a key member of the development team pretty quickly, and was routinely tasked with the most difficult and creative work. Eventually, I was doing most of the software design and architecture as well.We built a great variety of interesting stuff at Microstar, from image processing, editing, rendering and compression software, through to complex document/content management systems.

I started this company with a friend of mine after high school. I did all the software development, and he did all the business development.We produced boxed retail software products for desktop publishing, including a complete desktop publishing package and a PostScript interpreter and rasterizer.We did all this for the Amiga computer. That was a big mistake, of course, which the company did not survive. We were young.
