About Matthew J.

I enjoy providing technically sound, optimized designs for clients in the downstream refining and petrochemical sectors. My current project in 2022, involves design of a licensor package (BEP) for a 20,000 BPSD grassroots Delayed Coking Unit (DCU) for a confidential client in the CIS.On another recent project I served as the lead engineer of a four (4) person process team to revamp an existing unsat gas plant that was near its maximum capacity. I performed process simulation work and generated ideas for changes to the process configuration to minimize required equipment replacement. I assigned and checked work of the other engineers on the project and interfaced with the client and other disciplines on process input. I provided feedback to the client on options to achieve a clear path forward in terms of achieving the desired capacity increase while improving product quality and reliability. Other tasks included validating vendor proposals against company and client standards, checking the team’s relief device calculations, and validating HTRI runs with heat transfer to ensure feasible heat exchanger designs.I have extensive experience in simulation and grassroots design of several refinery units, including gasoline hydrotreating, lubes hydrocracking/hydroprocessing, Solvent Deasphalting (SDA), and other downstream refinery technologies. In addition to hydroprocessing work, I also perform specialist design work on core Delayed Coking Unit equipment related to Decoking Water Systems including the Coke Cutting Pump, Coke Pit and Maze, Decoking Water Tank, Quench Pumps, and Clear Water Pumps. The most recent project in which I performed this design work was for a grassroots Delayed Coker for JSC Gazpromneft in the Russian Federation. Two previous projects have given me a range of design experience in plant offsites and utilites areas including refining and petrochemical intermediate and product storage tank designs (fixed roof, and blanketed internal floating roof), fuel oil systems for firing process heaters/boilers, circulating hot oil heating loops, fuel gas collection systems, and waste water processing.
