About Matt Venables

I am a product-focused engineer, entrepreneur, and angel investor with a successful history of building groundbreaking experiences in Web3 and AI. I’ve spent my career building companies from the earliest stages, working up and down the tech stack, from writing cryptographic algorithms for IBM Mainframes powering big banks, to running Product/Engineering at a high-growth IPO-bound consumer product company, to successfully fundraising for several of my own startups, investing in many more, and everything in between.I am obsessed with solving real pain points for real people with delightful, fluid product experiences for the web and your phone. I love to build amazing teams, strategize growth plans, and to write the code to make it all possible. I have had deep experience in all aspects of starting, building, growing, and running software businesses, with millions of people worldwide using my software. My decade-long immersion in the fintech world has allowed me to contribute substantially to influential crypto products, such as the USDC stablecoin and Verite, a decentralized identity protocol. These projects have grown to be some of the most important cornerstones of the global Web3 ecosystem. Before Catena Labs, I founded M2 Labs, a Web3 development studio with a consistent track record of launching innovative products and exceeding a $1m ARR for a 2 person team. I also founded Vested, a platform that has enabled thousands of employees to confidently navigate their startup equity compensation. In addition, I created consumer-friendly platforms like jog.fm and songbpm.com, which together attract millions of unique visitors each month. Fundamentally, my goal is to use software to help people live happier, healthier lives. And to have fun while doing it.

  • Circle

    Circle Jan 2014 - Apr 2019
    Remote First, Us
As an early contributor and key executive at Circle (backed by Goldman Sachs, IDG, Breyer Capital, Accel, General Catalyst and more), I played an instrumental role in scaling the startup from a six-person team to an over 300 person organization with a $3 billion valuation.Leading the product/engineering teams for our suite of consumer products, I was responsible for building, growing, strategizing, and hiring the best talent in the world. Early in my tenure, our team launched the Circle for Bitcoin app (later Circle Pay), one of the worlds first crypto wallets, providing users ease and security in buying, selling, and transferring bitcoin across multiple platforms. We scaled that business to millions of transactions handling instant cross-border FX and payments across USD, GBP, EUR, and BTC.In tune with the company's exponential growth, I also steered the development and GTM for Circle Invest - our second consumer product, which introduced customers to simple and accessible investment opportunities in a wide selection of cryptocurrencies. Navigating the company's expansion through strategic acquisitions, I was part of the M&A team that acquired the worlds leading cryptocurrency exchange, Poloniex, in 2018 and led the acquisition of several smaller companies to enhance the Poloniex platform.Building on this, in 2018 I was privileged to be part of the small team that built and launched USDC - now the industry's most trusted stablecoin.
