I grew up in New Orleans and never imagined living anywhere else. Leaving college, I faced a problem returning home: there were no meaningful tech jobs in NOLA. To stay, I had to create my own companies. My first venture — Chimera Digital Imaging in the 90s — produced TV ads, 3D animations, and special effects, but we struggled financially due to limited local clients, and our work wasn’t widely seen.In 1999, inspiration struck with a more ambitious vision: a global marketplace for 3D models, photos, and stock media. We launched TurboSquid in 2000, incorporating the Chimera team. Today, millions of artists across over 150 countries use TurboSquid, and you've seen their work countless times. I built the technology as CTO, and then served as CEO for most of its history, overseeing the sale of key technology to Autodesk in 2011 and the acquisition by Shutterstock in 2021, totaling a $101 million exit.Along the way, I worked to build a local tech community. In 2005, I co-authored Louisiana's Digital Interactive Media incentives, which spurred entrepreneurial growth in New Orleans & Louisiana. I've chaired the non-profit New Orleans Startup Fund since its inception, investing in over 80 regional companies.Committed to fostering leadership, I studied as a Henry Crown Fellow with the Aspen Institute, deepening my interest in addressing complex societal challenges. I co-chaired Mayor Mitch Landrieu's technology transition team upon his entry into office, and Mayor LaToya Cantrell's overall transition in 2018. This gave me a front row seat into New Orleans government. After selling TurboSquid, I took a break but returned in 2023 to start FixNOLA.net and the Wisdom Foundation to tackle New Orleans' infrastructure issues. Our goal is straightforward: track and report citywide problems reported by citizens — like potholes and drainage issues — with accurate data, highlighting what has been fixed and what needs attention. We believe FixNOLA has created the most precise dataset on the city's infrastructure and 311 reporting.Working on FixNOLA revealed that cities worldwide face similar challenges. In 2024, I launched Civilized.ai, a for-profit company with rockstar staff from TurboSquid, to develop tools that help government workers and citizens communicate and solve these problems globally. Civilized is collaborating with major cities, and I'm grateful we can offer FixNOLA and New Orleans our support for free. Thanks to the TurboSquid acquisition, I can do this work without needing contracts or compensation from the city.Wish us luck!
