For a guy who’s always lived in and loves New Mexico, I’ve also been able to spend time in some impactful places. From trips to Bolivia witnessing how a community can take control of its destiny, to supporting the US Military in Europe and across the US as part of Improve Group, I’ve been fortunate to witness that business can be part of real transformation for people and communities. Not because business has all the capital or answers, in fact it has much to learn, but because transformation is about people, relationships, creating value, and seeing potential; and when done right business can do those things too.My dad Marv has taught me countless lessons, but I’ll always remember how he lived the idea that business is about more than the bottom line: it’s about change. Change for our clients, change among our team, and change in the communities we work in. We don’t always do it well. In fact, we fail often, but when it works, it’s a transformational thing. And it can create change from the inside out.My ‘day job’ is serving as the president of a construction innovation firm known as Improve Group. I’ve had the privilege to work there 20+ years now, and despite my frequent shortcomings, the company has gone through an incredible transformation. It’s here that I’ve been witness to the real impact that a building can have on an organization, its mission and its team. Whether it’s a squadron in need of a place to train, or a hospital in need of a new wing to serve more people, space and technology are integral to their success.With an incredible team I’ve gotten to be part of supporting the community and foster economic development in Albuquerque through the creation of B3 Development – an organization that works to make real estate development people-centered, create a sense of place, and build for future generations. But buildings lack purpose without people who stick around, so we’ve also turned our attention to the youth in the city through the founding of Arches Career Accelerator. Arches connects talented, motivated students with organizations that are working to do big things. We believe these connections and the careers that follow will provide a solution to the recruitment challenges these businesses face while creating opportunities for driven students.In the end, whether at Improve Group, Arches, or B3 there are some incredible things happening in ABQ. It’s been a wild ride.
