Executive Director Maureen Holohan is a leader, fundraiser, volunteer and published writer. Her success started as a young athlete who was born five days after the passing of Title IX. As a former high school All-American (Troy, NY/Troy High School) and Class A New York State Champion and state MVP, Maureen received a full basketball scholarship to Northwestern University. As a Wildcat, she earned All-Big Ten honors for three seasons while studying in the Medill School of Journalism. During her junior year, she won The Randolph Hearst Journalism Award for feature writing, otherwise known as the Pulitzer Prize of college journalism. After graduating from Northwestern with a degree in journalism and a minor in urban studies, Maureen played professional basketball briefly in Greece, Hungary and Israel. She returned to the United States with rough drafts of her young adult sports series of books called, “The Broadway Ballplayers.” No publisher would publish the series, so Maureen set out on her own to tell the stories of young players who grew up loving sports on Broadway Ave. Within five years, Maureen visited 150 schools and sold over 110,000 copies. Book #4: Sideline Blues was a finalist for The Publisher’s Association Young Adult Book of the Year.Without knowing anyone outside of her CYO friend/opponent at Columbia University and her sister, who was working in Manhattan, Maureen moved to NYC to be an English and history teacher, and to expand her career as a freelance writer. While freelancing for Women’s Health, Elle Magazine, USA Today and the Chicago Tribune, Maureen continued to play basketball and soon she started to teach small groups of kids. She is also a member of the Boys and Girls Club National Hall of Fame, the Troy High Hall of Fame and the NYS Section II Hall of Fame. In 2009, she started Mo’ Motion with a team of seventh grade boys. Today Mo’ Motion and the Gotham Basketball Association serve 1,000 boys and girls annually. Mo’ Motion and GBA were named as the January 2017 JR NBA Program of the Month. Both programs have been the recipients of awards and grants from Sports NY-1, Good Sports and the Hoosie Martin Foundation.Through her nonprofit, Mo' Motion, Inc, Maureen has raised over $700K in funding, and led volunteer efforts for 12 years for various communities in Manhattan. Her recent endeavors include open water marathon swimming, working as an EMT in the Bronx, promoting voter registration and turnout and writing stories and pitches on her new website TOTHERIM.COM.

Emergency Medical TechnicianSeniorcare Emergency Medical Services Dec 2021 - Feb 2022Bronx, New York, United StatesAfter passing my New York State-EMT exam, I worked as a rookie EMT at SeniorCare starting in December and ending at the end of February, which was during the first omicron wave. Due to the commute time to the Bronx and back, and my full-time commitment to Mo' Motion, I was unable to sustain part-time hours during my Sunday and Monday night shifts. Being an EMT was the best, hardest job I've ever had in my life, and it's something I can return. I did it to help health care workers with the intention of volunteering in an EMT capacity. I found out too late that it is hard to get an EMT volunteer spot in Manhattan due to liability issues and omnipresent hazards. My instructors advised that I work for a private company to apply what I'd learned after completing a two-month accelerated course in July-August 2020. I was the only person in my class and on duty who had intended on working in a volunteer capacity with medicine not being one of my core skill sets unlike my partners: full-time EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, pre-med students, nurses or any of the above in training. I loved everything about my experience as an EMT except the fact that I could not sustain it. The starting pay was also $17.50/hour with the highest industry pay being $25/hour (for EMT-B), but one would have to work at least six months to be 911 and have significant advanced life saving experience to receive the highest pay as an EMT short of paramedic and management roles. Senior Care is extremely well run, and I am fortunate to have had many heroic front liners as my mentors, leaders and partners. My mother was a nurse for 31 years. She worked every floor of the hospital, and in the local college infirmary, as a grade school nurse sub, in the local BOCES program, and in her most beloved and meaningful position as a hospice nurse. I thought of her always when I went in and out of nursing homes for transports and understood why her job was so meaningful. -
