About Maureen Lynch

Roughly 3 in 4 patients with advanced breast cancer develop incurable bone metastases, which is overwhelmingly osteolytic, causing severe pain, nerve compression, and fractures and poor patient prognosis. My research program focuses on the skeletal mechanical environment and its regulation of cancer. We develop novel in vivo and in vitro mechanical loading model systems to correlate cellular function with cancer pathogenesis, tissue-level changes in tumor burden, and skeletal tissue strength. My long-term goal is to identify novel therapeutic targets for treating and preventing bone metastases as well as cancer-associated reductions in bone strength.

Using an in vivo loading model, I studied the effects of using mechanical forces to induce bone formation and to prevent bone loss at critical skeletal sites at risk for fracture. I also investigated how hormone status and age modulate bone adaptation.
