I was a mathematics teacher in a range of secondary schools in the north east and west of Scotland. In 2000, I joined Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education, where I inspected a wide range of schools as well as education authorities and child protection. I held a number of posts in HMIE, including national specialist for mathematics and District Inspector for Glasgow and North Ayrshire. I joined Glasgow City Council in December 2007 as Director of Education and retired in January 2022. Under my leadership in Glasgow, suspensions dropped by 93% and attainment of young people increased significantly – the proportion of young people achieving five or more level SCQF 6 awards more than trebled in the same period. I received an OBE in 2015 for services to education in Glasgow and Malawi. I was awarded an honorary doctorate from Heriot Watt University in October 2021 for services to education and raising attainment of those in the most deprived areas.I am the chair of the charity Malawi Leaders of Learning, www.mlol.co.uk; I am a trustee of MCR Pathways, www.mcrpathways.org; I am on Career Ready Scotland Advisory Board and Clyde College Board. Just after I retired, I worked with Hertfordshire County Council supporting their inclusion work.In July 2023, I started working with London Violence Reduction Unit supporting their development of London's Inclusion Charter. The Charter is now published and we are working with boroughs and MATs to promote inclusion including promoting UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Schools Award which is now free to all London schools. I support schools and local authorities with their relational practice along with Paul Dix’s team from When The Adults Change.
