Sabbatical

Cranford, New Jersey, Us

UCC granted me a one year sabbatical after I submitted a detailed proposal for creating a computer center in Plainfield to introduce pre-school children to “Edutainment” software. After seeing Noah, my then 4 year old having taught himself to read using Broderbund’s “Just Grandma and Me” talking book CD, and being aware that inner city children start school behind already in basic skill. I felt I could make a difference if I could expose very young Plainfield children to similar enrichment.By contacting the dozen or so creators of children’s Edutainment software explaining what I was doing and asking for free samples, I obtained over 100 CDs. That summer I arranged with the YWCA of Plainfield to bring their campers to the Plainfield campus of UCC where they used a PC lab with 20 computers. Once this prototype got going, I invited reporters from local NJ papers to see what was happening. I got quite a bit of publicity. I contacted local Y’s, churches and neighborhood groups to find a home for the center in the fall. Father Robert Griner of the Grace Episcopal church became as excited about the idea as I. The Grace Church is the home of the Plainfield Girls choir, so Father Griner was able to solicit enough funds to purchase 10 PC, which were installed in the church for use by the new pre-school Edutainment center until after school when used by the Girls choir.. In fact, in evening classes in Word, Excel and other office products were held. I ran the Plainfield Computer for preschools with the YMCA and Neighborhood House and several smaller day care providers bringing their children to the church several times a week. The Plainfield Computer Center exists today (with new PCs), but unfortunately is used only for the Girls choir and adult train, no more little kids voices.
