My previous work roles include nurse and midwife, family counsellor, advocate, manager and chief executive officer of Advocare, Inc., which advocates for people receiving aged care services. I've written since childhood and many of my formal positions included a substantial amount of writing . I've published short stories, travel articles, book reviews and a memoir called Other People's Country. It was long-listed for a Walkley Award for Non-fiction Books and short listed for the WA Premier's History Award (2008). In 2017, I worked as project manager for the Spirit of the Streets Choir in Perth. This work brought together much of my previous experience and formal training. The project involved enabling members of the choir to write their stories, or helping them to write them. The stories were published in a book, 'The Spirit of the Streets Choir - Our Stories.'I blog regularly at www.maureenhelen.com and occasionally facilitate writing groups.
