Maureen Johnson León (Mo) is a doctoral candidate in data science and interdisciplinary indoor air studies, with a particular interest in the history and future of novel measurement science, risk models, and unpredictability, within the context of climate and health disasters. Her work generally focuses on epidemiology its dynamic relationship to history, infrastructure, policy, and a changing climate. Dissertation research projects have been chosen so that they center collaboration across disciplines and are often designed in partnership with non-academic organizations to promote and explore data fluency between different stakeholders. Her background is in public health science (infectious disease), and her skills within the science world tend towards collaboration, connection, bringing in new viewpoints, and general openness to people and ideas. During the early days of the pandemic, Mo joined two modeling consortiums where she worked on projects related to rural health, social vulnerability, incarcerated populations, and data equity. She appeared as a scientific expert on English and Spanish media ( live TV and print) on behalf of her research group to communicate scientific information in responsible and accessible ways. Her pre-pandemic public health work addressed structural disparities in HIV and TB burden, resource allocation, and interventions to build better public health infrastructure and informed collaboration between communities and institutions. Formative early career experiences include working in HIV data analysis in her hometown hospital, and piloting early childhood epidemiology fieldwork with Socios en Salud (Partners in Health) in Peru. Both pilot projects were integrated into larger research, outreach, and intervention pipelines for addressing disparities in HIV care.Outside of public health, Mo has worked in speculative design and narrative change projects, integrating tech, art, data and stories to build interactive experiences for multiple stakeholders. She is applying this work in her PhD studies to consider the possible futures for cities and their stakeholders in response to a changing climate. She is currently working on a project that explores that the relationship between sensor technology and risk models, with a focus on parametric insurance finance.She is an enthusiastic cyclist, sailor, dancer, and outdoor generalist who loves spending time with her multi-generational communities.
