About Maureen Petterson

Interdisciplinary scientist who has worked on a variety of projects ranging from running statistical analysis on Monte Carlo simulations for cancer treatment to using physics informed neural networks to predict failure in lithium ion batteries. I have experience building end-to-end data science solutions and using machine learning to solve challenging problems in STEM. Most of my free time is spent in various outdoor activities (rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing, hiking), fostering animals for Foothills Animal Shelter, and tending to a garden that produces, on average, four cherry tomatoes each year.

    Woburn, Massachusetts, Us
My primary role is focused on development and adoption of advanced imaging technology into clinical workflow for proton therapy radiation treatment. I also work on hardware and software technology development, simulation and modeling, systems integration, mock treatment design, and development of software tools to improve both workflow and analysis.Specifics include:- Development, evaluation, and integration of proton radiography and proton tomography systems- Developed and run Monte Carlo simulations in C++ (Geant4) to model beamline kinematics, patient dose distributions, and prototype proton radiography system for clinical use- Extensive use of software (Python) for data analysis and visualization
  • Applied Materials
    Process Engineer
    Applied Materials Jun 2014 - Oct 2017
    Santa Clara, Ca, Us
I worked in R&D to develop and optimize processes for thin film modification of metals, semiconductors, and dielectric materials for integration into advanced logic and memory devices. This work targets node 7 through node 3 development. Specifics include:- Developing and executing experiments on capital equipment aimed at modifying the physical and electrical properties of materials- Analysis of material and device performance through various types of measurements, including, but not limited to: XPS, XRR, XTEM, EELS, SEM, SIMS, RBS, Vt, and Rs- Research into ion implantation and plasma based processing to achieve customer targets- Developing DOE using JMP to extract key process parameters controlling film modification- Writing patents (4 granted, 2 awaiting grant status) - Collaborating with several international institutions to understand fundamental properties of materials through both modeling and experiment
  • Nanoresearch Facility, University Of Florida
    Research Scientist
Nanoresearch Facility, University Of Florida Aug 2013 - Feb 2014
I developed DOE (design of experiments) for various semiconductor fabrication processes in addition to calibration and characterization of thin films.Current technical skills:• Device fabrication: photolithography, ALD, CVD, RIE, evaporation, sputtering, passivation, and wet chemical etches• Device characterization: Photovoltaic cells (PCE and EQE) , transistors (leakage and transfer curves), and FPGA based data acquisition • Film characterization: AFM, SEM, UV-VIS Spectroscopy, C-V, and 4-probe measurements• Fabrication and purification of carbon nanotubes followed by integration into various devices
  • University Of Florida
    Phd Candidate In Physics
University Of Florida Aug 2008 - Aug 2013
    Gainesville, Florida, Us
My dissertation, titled "Nanostructured Carbon Nanotube-Silicon Schottky Junction Solar Cells", details my doctoral research on photovoltaics. The fabricated devices, which use a carbon nanotube film spray deposited onto silicon nanowires, demonstrate a modulated power conversion efficiency through electronic gating of the active area carbon nanotube film. A power conversion efficiency of over 15% is demonstrated.
  • University Of Florida
    Teaching Assistant
University Of Florida Aug 2008 - Dec 2009
    Gainesville, Florida, Us
Taught both undergraduate lab and discussion sections for the UF physics department.
  • Santa Cruz Institute For Particle Physics (Scipp)
    Assistant Specialist
Santa Cruz Institute For Particle Physics (Scipp) Oct 2005 - Sep 2007
My research at SCIPP focused on two projects: 1) A feasibility of study using proton computed tomography to image a deeply embedded simulated tumor (done in collaboration with Loma Linda Medical Center), and 2) Analyzing the charge collection efficiency of irradiated silicon strip detectors for use in the ATLAS detector at CERN. These projects involved programming in C++ and ROOT, extensive electronics fabrication and troubleshooting, working with FPGA based systems for data extraction and analysis, and standard semiconductor characterization techniques (e.g. two probe measurements for capacitance).
