CurrentLed multifaceted external and internal strategic communications to increase brand awareness and reputation for The Chronicle, positioning as preeminent national source of news and information about higher education. Established strategic communications function after role was vacant for 5 years and managed all outbound and inbound media and public relations activities. Evaluated impact of communications efforts on brand, audiences and revenue.Developed pitches for newsworthy topics, subject matter experts, editorial initiatives, exclusive datasets and special newsroom reports to national, regional, trade and local media. Interviews and coverage appeared in CNN, CBS, PBS, NPR, Voice of America, New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, LA Times, Teen Vogue, The Atlantic, The Guardian, The New Yorker, Forbes, Axios, Politico and Fox Business. Tracked earned media coverage and provided metrics reports to executive team and Chronicle staff. Publicity value of earned media exceeded $95M in 2023 and $216M in 2024. Media trained and prepared SMEs and reporters for >100 media interviews with briefings and mock interviews and provided follow-up feedback, ensuring branding and messaging were consistent. Increased engagement and camaraderie among employees by posting timely high-profile media interviews, news, awards and reporting on employee Slack channels and regularly sharing colleagues’ activities and accomplishments.Pursued and developed collaborative reporting partnership opportunities with national media and relevant nonprofit organizations including NPR, Pew Charitable Trusts and ProPublica, amplifying Chronicle’s reach and visibility. Promoted Chronicle’s support of excellence in journalism, including Diversity in Media Scholarship, Society of Professional Journalists’ Corbin Gwaltney Award and student journalism internships, fostering next generation of journalists and bringing more diverse voices into industry.
