Dr. Mauricio Peña is the Chief Safety Officer at Waymo, the leader in autonomous driving technology with a mission to be the world’s most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project, Waymo has been focused on building the World's Most Experienced Driver to improve everyone's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes.Mauricio has over 25 years of technical and management experience designing, testing, and deploying complex systems. He recently served as Vice President of Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance for Virgin Orbit. The company's primary focus is the delivery of small satellites to Low-Earth Orbit aboard Virgin's LauncherOne rocket which is air-launched from a 747 aircraft named "Cosmic Girl." Prior to that, Mauricio served as Director of Safety and Mission Assurance for the Boeing Commercial Crew Program, which involved designing, manufacturing, and testing the Starliner Space Capsule that will transport astronauts to the International Space Station. Over his career, he has held various leadership positions within the Boeing Company's Space Division, including Spacecraft Systems Engineering Lead and Chief Engineer for Satellite Systems Engineering. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, a Master's degree in Systems Architecting and Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering, all from the University of Southern California
