About Mauricio Serna

I am a first-generation Harvard MBA (2021) with a deep passion for sustainability, nature conservation, architecture, and design – interests that have blended into a career at the intersection of real estate, hospitality, environmental and social impact.My family’s story has also shaped the lens through which I see the world and understand my role in it. I was born in Pereira, Colombia – where I lived until my family immigrated to the U.S. in 1999, fleeing decades of internal civil war, social unrest, and economic inequality.With only an elementary school education, my parents found work in construction, housekeeping, and custodian services. We fought a decade-long immigration adjustment process during which we experienced life as undocumented immigrants. Through a mix of luck, perseverance, hard work, and support from many generous individuals along the way – the course of my life and that of my family drastically changed for the better. I attended Georgetown University on a scholarship, began my finance career at Goldman Sachs with the support of incredible mentors, and expanded my awareness of the business world's ability to deliver profit with purpose at Harvard Business School – all unlikely outcomes for someone of my background. Today, my life’s purpose is to extend similar opportunities to people around the world and to advance environmental conservation initiatives in the commercial real estate industry without compromising on financial value creation.Note: the posts, comments, and views shared on my profile are separate from those of my employer, Starwood Capital Group.
