I am honored to currently be part of MBARI, one of the best oceanographic institutes in the world, devoted to advancing marine science and technology to increase our knowledge of the ocean.During my time here, I will collaborate with the seafloor mapping group led by Dr. David W. Caress. I will design systems for path planning aimed at improving the quality of the data collected during low-altitude mapping operations in complex terrains. Additionally, real-time replanning modules will be added to locally modify the planned path to enhance the safety of the operations. These modules will rely on real-time processing of forward-looking sonar imagery.

My time as a partner, Senior Engineer, and Head of Products at Norwegian Subsea has been an incredible journey, showing me the process of turning an idea into a market-ready product that can compete with those produced by established international names in the business. Phd Student And Researcher

During my Ph.D. program, I explored various aspects of control theory, remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles, seabed mapping, automatic planning and replanning of mapping missions, and new user interfaces for underwater vehicles. Here are a few highlights of my work:- I was part of a research team focused on developing the first dynamic positioning (DP) control systems for the ROVs employed by NTNU. This team was lead by Ph.D. candidate Fredrik Dukan. My primary focus was on the navigation and state estimation modules, utilizing Kalman filtering and non-linear passive observers.- I ideated and contributed, together with Ph.D. candidate Michel R. Miyazaki, to the development of a novel augmented-reality user interface, integrating Oculus Rift glasses with the guidance system of NTNU’s ROVs.- In collaboration with Ph.D. candidate Anastasios Lekkas, I developed path planning and replanning algorithms based on Voronoi diagrams and Fermat’s spirals to efficiently and safely guide ASVs and UUVs from origin to destination in the 2D and 3D spatial domains.- I contributed to the development of photomosaic tools for seabed mapping and initiated discussions on how the information contained in such maps could be autonomously used for path and mission planning of underwater vehicles.- I participated in numerous sea missions as a DP system operator, ROV pilot, and data analyst.For more detailed information, please refer to my Ph.D. thesis linked below.

I have been sharing the teaching duties for the course TMR4240 - Marine Control Systems with my mentor and supervisor, Professor Asgeir J. Sørensen. I managed approximately 40% of the classes and handled the entirety of defining, following up on, correcting, and grading course assignments, lab work, and the course project. Additionally, I redesigned a significant portion of the teaching materials, which have been used in subsequent years.During this time, I had the incredible opportunity to meet exceptionally skilled students, and I am proud to say that I have learned a great deal from them. One of the most important things I have learned is that teaching is a two-way process and cannot achieve its goals without the true involvement of the students in the process itself.I became friends with some of them in the following years and colleagues with a few. I still follow and admire their personal and career achievements, hoping that I might have contributed, even in the smallest way, to their success.

Developed prototype algorithms for the identification and detection of buried objects using a custom Wide-Band Microwave GPR. The primary goal of the project was to design a system for the segmentation, identification, and classification of buried objects radar imageries such as landmines and other dangerous objects.Additionally, I contributed to writing the user and technical manuals for the Wide-Band Microwave GPR and developed algorithms for the ESOIL company.This project was a collaboration between ESOIL, the Italian State Defense Department, and the DIBET (biomedical, electronics, and telecommunication engineering) department of the Marche Polytechnic University (UNIVPM).
