About Max Bangs
Geneticist with over 16 years of experience working with NGS and Sanger sequencing from DNA and RNA extraction through PCR and genomic library preparation and data analysis. I excel in project design and problem-solving ranging from setting up my Ph.D. and postdoc labs for genomic sequencing and library prep to developing tools for genetic engineering and targeted genomic sequencing for labs with no prior genomic experience. To accomplish this I have organized, mentored, and managed teams of students and scientists including groups of more than 20 people from multiple countries and from different academic, private, and governmental agencies, as well as displayed strong written (20+ published articles) and presenting skills (+40 conference, departmental, and invited talks).ResearchGate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Max-BangsGoogle Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=9nfEVjIAAAAJ&hl=enCV and/or resume available on request

Postdoctoral Researcher
Primary role is to develop genomic tools to study South American and Philippine rodent radiations in using a combination of phylogenomics, biogeography, population genomics analyses. The developed RNA probe set and genomic library preparation method has been developed and published as an easy and affordable tool that can be used by a wide array of researcher (Bangs and Steppan, 2021). Work also included running a genetics lab consisting of 3 to 5 graduate and undergraduate students (includes ordering, mentoring, and consulting duties), writing grants and research articles, carrying out laboratory work (Illumina and Sanger sequencing) and presenting at several conferences, department seminars, class lectures, and postdoctoral competitions.Skills: Illumina library preparation (AHE, ddRAD and whole genome), DNA extraction, PCR, Sanger sequencing, bioinformatics (basic perl, python, bash, and R scripting, Illumina data processing, cluster computing), genomic data analysis (phylogenomics, phylogeography, population genomics).
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Primary role was to develop and implement a CRISPR/Cas 9 methodology for gene insertion in catfish for aquaculture (genetical modification) as well as problem solve various PCR and sequencing issues. This included supervising and organizing teams in a combined molecular and aquaculture lab consisting of 18 to 24 personnel from seven different countries including graduate students visiting scholars, postdocs, and faculty. Projects supervised included genetic engineering, DNA and RNA sequencing, genomic wide association studies, analytical chemistry (GC-MS of lipids), disease and stress challenges, and development biology (tissue staining and cross sectioning). Also wrote several research articles and grants (received $575,000 over three grants) and presented research at conferences, department seminars, and class lectures.Skills: Gene editing (CRISPR/Cas9, Tol2), transgenic detection (Surveyor mutation detection, Sanger sequencing), DNA extraction, RNA extraction, Illumina sequencing (RNAseq and miRNAseq), Sanger sequencing, primer design, design of dsDNA CRISPR construct, lipid extraction and GC-MS analysis (Chrombox Q), hybrid detection using multiplexed PCR, fish care, disease and stress challenges.
