About Max Beck
I am a recent graduate of Vanderbilt University and first-year medical student at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. I majored in Biochemistry and Chemical Biology and was awarded summa cum laude. My wet-lab research focused on the discovery of novel natural products through the aid of computational methods. I received honors in Biochemistry and Chemical Biology for my investigation into antibiotic drug discovery. My clinical research, on the other hand, examined long COVID symptomatology. I have experience in enrolling patients in the emergency department and analyzing clinical data. Outside of my academic interests, I was a student-athlete and a member of the Vanderbilt University Varsity Men's Cross Country Team. I also participated in a variety of community engagement efforts that focused on the greater Nashville area. Ultimately, I strive to be a compassionate physician who is at the forefront of biomedical innovation, while improving local population health.

CurrentRecipient of the Distinguished Student Scholarship, O. Earl and Lorena Whitsell Endowed Scholarship Fund, and Class of 1967 Scholarship
Clinical Research Associate
I was a clinical research associate under the mentorship of Dr. Alan Storrow in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. My project was called “Perspectives,” which examined patients’ experiences with COVID-19 to improve the care provided to individuals who have long COVID. I enrolled 100 patients in this study and published a manuscript about my findings in the Vanderbilt Undergraduate Research Journal.
Student Athlete
I was a member of the Vanderbilt Men’s Varsity Cross Country Team. I spent 20 hours per week practicing and competed on a biweekly basis. I also traveled to highly competitive meets throughout the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Undergraduate Research Assistant
September 2021 - Present: As a member of the Walker Lab, I interrogated biosynthetic gene clusters found in microbial genomes to identify novel natural products. These natural products can potentially be optimized as clinically relevant antibiotics and anti-tumor medications. January 2020 - August 2021: During my time in the Plate Lab, I investigated how mutations affect the trafficking and function of CFTR, the protein associated with cystic fibrosis. Using computational and in vitro models, we determined which mutations can improve the stability of CFTR and thereby the symptoms experienced by cystic fibrosis patients. These mutations can hopefully be used as gene therapy for cystic fibrosis patients in the future.
Undergraduate Research Fellow
SyBBURE is one of the few year-round undergraduate research programs in the country. I engaged in a community of supportive peers and experienced scientists through which I received individualized mentorship. I participated in team-based design projects where we explored interests outside our research, built technical and soft skills, gained experience working in teams, and learned to identify and solve problems.
