My first research project investigated the disruption of local and global congruency on the semantic processing of native English and non-native English participants using EEG technology. In order to complete this project, I received training around the use of EEG hardware – involving the EEG cap fitting, gel application, and integrating the EEG hardware with the experimental recording. Alongside this, I had to understand the software used during EEG research, gaining familiarity with tools such as PsychoPy and EEGLAB.

I am enrolled with Home-Start Essex as a volunteer, making regular contact with vulnerable families within Essex. This role trained me in mental health and abuse awareness within the domestic setting; my role has been to safeguard children through the regular support of parents, talking through hard time and situations or signposting them to any of Homestarts other resources. This has drastically improved my communication abilities, specifically, in mastering active listening and passive support within people’s lives. This role provides a great privilege to be a part of the lives of those in my local community and is a vehemently rewarding experience.
