From 2008 to 2011 I was the Commander of Newcastle City. I led this command through significant change following the merging of the previous Newcastle and Waratah Local Area Commands. The merging of Newcastle and Waratah LAC's into Newcastle City LAC brought about significant challenges, including: general community based policing, business restructuring, human resource management together with management of local politicians and media.Notwithstanding these challenges, Newcastle provided many opportunies of advancing skills in public order management, emergency management and crime management in a distinct social and geographic area within NSW. Of significance was the work undertaken and outcomes achieved in reducing alcohol related assaults and anti social behaviour as a result of strict licensing restrictions and operational policing strategies.
