Serve as a Camp Counselor at Camp Buck and Camp Vegas which are week long stay-away camps. I have been a member of this organization since I was a kid. I provide care, mentorship, and education for up to 100 campers. I ensure to maintain their overall safety and wellbeing while monitoring their diabetes care. I am on duty 24 hours of the day by checking the kid's blood sugars at 2 am and 4 am or staying up all night participating in clinical studies. I also assist the endocrinologists as part of the medical staff. After meals, I care for the children, assist in carbohydrate counting, and administer their insulin properly. Overall, I strive to be a role model to the children and make them feel confident about growing up with Type 1 Diabetes. I enjoy interacting with other diabetics from all different walks of life.

As a diabetes educator, I work with diabetes nurses and endocrinologists. I educate patients across the entire hospital from the ICU, burn unit, psychiatric ward, and general inpatient rooms. I facilitate video education and answering any questions the patients have. I talk to the patients about their lifestyle and access to care at home. I find great pleasure in using my background and training to assist this patient population. I can always talk about diabetes camp with them or further explain how to properly carb count their meals. I enjoy working with my diabetes team and playing a role in the patient's care.

Miracle Network Dance Marathon is a movement benefiting Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, a non-profit organization that raises funds and awareness for more than 170 pediatric hospitals across North America. I was responsible for creating the inaugural Dance Marathon main event. I oversaw all event operations and the implementation of the timeline. I used my vision for USD's Dance Marathon and made it a reality in an 8 hour, online setting due to the COVID19 pandemic. Overall, our year-long effort was able to raise $36,550.12 for the kids! This was over 50% greater than our original goal of $23,470 that represented the 234,700 children that were admitted to Rady Children's Hospital in 2020. Our team was recognized for setting the record as the top-earning first-year fundraiser within the past 3 years.

I serve as the first point of contact for students, employers, alumni, and prospective students while coming into the Career Development Center. I educate students about the different resources and support that our office offers. I am familiar with multiple online career systems, and all of the career counselors services. I have presented to multiple first-year classes and discussion panels about the resources and opportunities our office has. I also provide event support ensuring that employers and students are having a positive experience at USD-hosted career events. Overall, I serve as a student ambassador for the Career Development Center while providing feedback and insight on my own experiences as a student.

Through the Pre-Health Peer Mentor program, I was able to mentor first-year students beginning their pre-health journey. I loved these experiences because they allowed me to grow as a student and share my struggles and how I overcame them. I could be an example to these students of how to avoid common pitfalls and get a running start on their careers. I had the opportunity to present my interests, major, and how I use my finance skills to make me a better pre-med student. I found great pleasure in answering these students' questions and giving them advice I truly wish I had as a struggling freshman. During COVID I feel my experience became more personable with the students because they were less nervous to ask questions and share. I appreciate our shared passion for medicine and healthcare.

Being on the executive board of PhiDE for two years has taught me great lessons about leadership. I served as the VP of Finance and then the President. I have been in charge of facilitating, planning, delegating, and executing several large philanthropy events for Rady Children's Hospital. Over my two-year term, the fraternity has collectively raised over $7,000! I have learned about leading through example, serving a population of like-minded individuals, and overall being the representative of PhiDE at our USD chapter. I have found great pleasure in guiding a team towards common goals and collaborating with others at a high level. I have enjoyed giving back to the fraternity and mentoring countless underclassmen at the beginning of their premed journey. Especially during COVID, I had to quickly adapt to new circumstances and create worthwhile activities and goals to still better the fraternity on a pre-med path.

This volunteer opportunity allowed me to work with the mentally and physically disabled. I got to assist and facilitate Zumba, music therapy, workouts, art, cooking, yoga, and overall ensuring the individuals have a positive experience. I loved coming back and seeing my favorite members and their faces brighten when they remembered me. I gained insight into the difficulties the families and individuals had with living with these disabilities. I found great joy in volunteering with them and putting a smile on their face.

As a patient safety rounder, I would go all throughout the hospital to assist nurses and ensure patient safety. Typically I would have multiple lengthy conversations with patients and make their stay more comfortable. I would do anything from getting them a warm blanket, an extra snack, or helping out the nursing team with simple tasks. I really enjoyed this role because it allowed me to put a smile on the patient's faces and relate to them on a more personal level. This position has been indefinitely stopped because of COVID.

This internship was through USD and allowed me to gain such a meaningful insight into what healthcare looks like within the hospital. It is difficult to envision what an emergency department or resident physician training is like. It is more typical to be in outpatient care in physician's clinics. I got to directly shadow residents and attending physicians as they administered care in the emergency department. My most memorable experience is being able to scrub into surgery after a patient is brought in with multiple critical wounds. I gained direct insight from the anesthesiologist and trauma surgeons as they performed a live-saving operation on the patient. I was able to stay for several hours until 4 am to witness the entire surgery. I was able to interact with all the physicians and ask as many questions as I wanted as I stood at the head of the operating table next to the patient. Overall, I gained such valuable experiences of witnessing emergency medicine, the daily life and struggles of a resident, and how patients are cared for by an entire medical team working together.
