I was employed part time as an undergraduate assistant under one of my professors testing photomultiplier tubes for output over time, and thermal variation consistency for different manufacturers. The effort was to go towards a larger collaboration studying the role of B mesons in CP violation, and decay modes in particle physics. Federal funding for the experiment was cut before it could be realized. My duties included building a light resistant box, construct an array of RC filter base circuits, connect an optical pulse generator to the array, connect a PLC stack of discriminator and multichannel analyzers to a GPIB of a PC, write histogram sorting code in C++ including standard 5% error, chi-squared, least squares comparison to normal distribution, and visually display results with error bars and lines of fit. A previous student constructed an EM insulated testing box for output vs. thermal variation. I made some simple photonic blocking modifications to this aparatus, but the effort served mostly as my introduction while I continued to gather data under the guidance of a post doctoral researcher and doctoral candidate.
Assembled scintillator based detector components for MINOS - Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search project. I used basic and power tools to make sheet metal casing, cut scintillator strips, inlay fiber optic cabling in an off campus factory consisting of about 20 staff members. We mixed epoxy on site, used an active track line epoxy injector to seal casing and inlay fiber cabling, and a fly cutter with micron precision. Vacuum sealing was used to enforce sealing. Our modules were shipped to a cosmic ray shielded mine situated half mile underground in northern Minnesota - we made over a thousand of these horizontally stacked plates as the length of the detector was approximately 100m.
