Satellite communication systems always have to traverse the whole atmosphere, where their waves are inevitably affected by everything that happens there, be it weather systems in the troposphere, or electrical charges in the ionosphere. This exciting area is where I have been working for 20 years.I entered the world of atmospheric science after studying electrical engineering, and hence am situated in the cross-over field between science and engineering. My research projects (including my Ph.D. work) have always concerned the abovementioned effects of the atmosphere on radio waves - even though there are always connections with other climatic phenomena, such as weather prediction and climate change.Because I'm so specialised, I've often had to change countries for a next research job. This has taken me from my native Netherlands to France, the UK, and Finland. All my research jobs I obtained through people who knew me and my work already, which might say something about my skills to sell myself to people who don't know me, but at least as much about how my work is valued by people who do have taken notice of it.Even at my age, where most researchers would go into managing research groups, I prefer a hands-on approach, and do the research myself, combining experience with a still fresh inspiration, and ideas both from myself and others.
